        “Intourist at its worst ”
Just come back from a one night stay at this establishment and I can confirm that its pretty awful. It looks like a concrete barracks and feels like on too. On the positive side it is walking distance from town but the walk uphill is pretty steep. We were desperate to go to Trinidad on an overnight trip from Havana and this was all we could get last minute, It was part of an all in deal with a driver and a guide from the government travel agency, who I think owned the hotel. Trinidad is fantastic so was really worth seeing despite this hotel. Although if you have the chance avoid it. The reception staff are very Soviet. We had rooms that were chalet-like but a good hike from the main reception. The rooms were pretty dingy. The aircon was antique and was very noisy. There were cockroaches in the room. The bathroom intermittantly had hot water and was pretty basic and unappealing. The bed was hard but at least the sheets were clean. The minibar was so noisy I had to unplug it with a great flash. The food is pretty horrible, although we went to a christmas eve dinner where the hotel put on a spread. I wonder how bad it is normally. At least we didn't get any stomach problems from it, although that might have been because we barely ate any. The breakfast was pretty awful too. All-in-all we were very glad to leave.

“Save your money and stay in a Casa Version 2 ”
Unfortunately, we booked this place over the phone. We were told "We have a bank", it is an expensive Cadeka. Do you have an ATM? Yes.. but it is in the town below. We were told "We have a bus", but it is not a shuttle bus. It does have a pool. Up high on a hill yes, with good views, but unless you are fit you will need a taxi to get back up the long hill from town unless you have your own transport. The staff are stiff, and decidedly distant. The restaurant staff are in uniform, stiff and unsmiling. Compared to a Casa the breakfast is woeful, a stiff and highly structured experience. We couldn't get out of the place quickly enough, and found a wonderful Casa at one quarter the price.

I admit I did have trouble sleeping in this hotel. Was it the lizard in the shower or the bugs crawling under my bed. This hotel was VERY rundown and was probably not updated since the 60's. I would not stay here again.

“Terrible hotel but Trinidad great! ”
We were aware of basic facilities in Cuba but found rat droppings in the room, when we drew this to the attention of the hotel management they cleared (some) of them up but over the next three nights we stayed more accumulated and the maids spent their time sculpting towels in search of a tip rather than cleaning up. After seeing a cockroach running along the breakfast buffet we did not feel much like eating either.

“more frogs here; bad location ”
I spent three nights here which was too long. The hotel is located on top of a hill far away from the main part of Trinidad. My room was clean. The air conditioner worked. And, I had hot water for showers. But, there were two small frogs hopping around. The water was turned off after around 11pm for whatever reason. And there were some toilet paper shortages. The main swimming pool had no water. My maid was quite talented as she can fold the towels into animals but that would not save this hotel.

“Save your money and stay in a casa... ”
We had the misfortune to have this place suggested to us by a travel agent when we found out that the Iberostar in town was too expensive. In summary, as my title suggests, save your money and stay in a casa. As with many places in Cuba, the rooms are in a bad state of repair with the bathroom fittings broken. Also, the room and bathroom were not properly cleaned so it felt dirty and grimy. The towels were a somewhat off-putting shade of grey. Although the airconditioner worked, it was very noisy making it hard to sleep. Again, as is common in Cuba, customer service was very poor with the staff giving off a vibe that they really couldn't care less. However, even by Cuban standards this place wasn't great. It took almost 30 minutes to check in because the receptionist was first in the bathroom and then checking her important mobile phone messages. As the resort wasn't that full, meals were served in the restaurant next to the pool. As they were prepared to order, they actually weren't that bad (for Cuba) however there were a lot of flies in the restaurant which made us doubt the hygiene standards. When I saw how murky the pool was I decided not to swim in it despite the heat and humidity. Perhaps the only positive was that the hotel is located on a hill above Trinidad so had some quite nice views. We didn't have the issue of the uphill walk in the heat as we had a rental car. We could have spent half the 118 CUC that we paid and had a much better experience in a casa in town - so avoid our bad experience and book somewhere else.

        “Butlins in Cuba! ”
No, sorry Butlins is way better. Good views but the climb back up out of Trinidad town is a killer in the heat and you'll need a taxi (4-6 cuc) each evening for after dinner because you won't want to eat at the hotel after you've tried it. Food is terrible, barely edible. Aircon is weak and water unreliable. Pool seems popular with Trinidad residents so is very busy with hotel guests struggling to find founders. Find somewhere else to stay if you can.

“"Lizards and Roaches and Frogs, Oh My!" ”
Ona beautiful hill just outside of Trinidad, Cuba, sits a mountainlodge style hotel with great views. The lobby is lovely. The outdoor pool area is lovely. And then you open the door to your room... Wow! Are you in for a surprise. Spartan, at best, I immediately realized there was no clock radio so I went to call for a wake-up call and realized there was no phone. I also discovered a lack of mostly all amenities. And then i went to wash up,wish was anexperience given that the entire sink wobbled, the faucet had its own wobble and the water pressure was non-existent. Turns out the shower head was 90% clogged and the warm water takes about 15 minutes to get there--then we found out, we were the lucky ones. Screams from next door revealed the cockaroach and the frog who decided to visit (at breakfast the next morning, several people related their frog-in the room stories, the winner being one young couple who shared their space with three frogs. Talk about 'creature comforts'! There are good things here, but they're all outside. Unexpectedly, we had nice entertainment at night as local performers put on a free show. There's also a famous 'disco cave' here, but it was closed the night we trekked out to see it. I don't know what other choices exist here, but this place will certainly provide you with an adventure!

“Grim in parts - but Trinidad was wonderful ”
We stayed here as part of Voyage Jules Verne tour. The hotel is based around a series of "bungalows". However I use this term carefully. We were in a fairly grim room with an adjoining door through which you could the people in the next room. Our room was quite dark and round by the curtains there were dead cockroaches which perhaps says something about how thoroughly it was cleaned. On our second day the power failed in our room and we were moved. Our second room was far better and appeared to have been recently refurbished. So we suggest you try to get rooms nearer to the main hotel complex where they seem better. The main restaurant was quite poor. Food ran out; plates ran out, there was not enough cutlery and spoons seemed to be unknown to them. Staff seemed to care little. Most worrying the hotel allowed stray cats and dogs to wander round the restaurant scrounging from diners. To metThis is totally unacceptable and makes one wonder what standards they apply in the kitchen. One of the nights we chose to eat in the poolside restaurant. We were desperate to escape the "Cuban buffet" if only for one night. We had surprisingly good pizzas but were the only people eating there - I guess because most people are on half board terms. On another night we ate at a restaurant on the edge of town which was OK. All of these issues are compensated for by the joy of Trinidad. The buildings and the cutlure (including the music) were just wonderful.

        “Lovely views - mixed experience”
Visited here for two nights as part of our Explore group tour. The hotel comprises a main building with reception, bar and restaurant. The rooms are in chalet buildings set on a hillside overlooking the city of Trinidad. I was fortunate as I had a very spacious chalet H24 to myself, it was close to reception and did not have any problems. Two people in the group had a drain problem in their chalet which wasn't very pleasant. There was a swimming pool at the top of the complex that looked very inviting but did not have time to try it out. Only had breakfast in the hotel. This was a large buffet breakfast with a good choice. The hotel is popular with large tour groups so it can get very busy at breakfast. The best part of the stay was sitting on the hotel terrace having a drink watching the sun set over the city of Trinidad.

“Huge complex, Set high on the hill over looking Trinidad ”
Wow you sure have to be fit to stay here. We were driven up the hill to our allotted accommodation after registration and I most certainly could not have taken my case up walking....So steep and a long way to walk to reception for meals etc....Blocks of 4 sets of accommodation, very basic with patio/ balcony which allowed us to look up a hill side, not a view of the town below.... curtains that didn't open in the bedroom or lounge area,.... lounge area with TV, no shelving in the bathroom too place toiletries, as what was supplied was on a chair in the bedroom...Small mini fridge and air con that was rather noisy.....spacious enough, plenty of hot water and hair dryer supplied, but beds uncomfortable although crisp clean linen.... Reception had seating to watch TV and the dining room was quite large with a good variety of foods available. Seating was on a first come first choice, waiters prompt to get drinks and with a pleasant demeanour...However the whole place gave a cold atmosphere and felt quite austere....

        “Splendid rooms - low-quality foods ”
We stayed for three nights in this hotel. The rooms are placed in small bungalows across a quite large area and most if not all bungalows have splendid views of the town and the ocean beyond. We had a front-row bungalow - two rooms that were connected throug a parting door - very convenient. The rooms were very large with two queen-sized beds, two armchairs and a table, and a vanity table. The room opened unto a patio/terrace with a view over the town and the ocean. In the room there was a quite well-stocked mini-bar. The toilet and bath was in a separat room and the sink was placed in a small room of its own. In a fairly large cupboard there was also a safe (against a small fee and a deposit that was returned on check-out). The airconditioning was working well, however after cooling the room down in the evening we did not use it during the night. Around the bungalows horses were grazing freely which was a pleasant feature. From the bungalows the town centre is only a small 5-10 minute walk away which is no problem. The restaurant was at best nothing to write home about. The hotel appeared full and as soon as the restaurant opened for breakfast or dinner, chaos broke out and it really was not very appealing. The food in general was dull - except for the fresh cooked-to-order eggs in the morning. On the premises there is both a small nick-nack shop and a convenience shop with tit-bits, softdrinks, water and the like. There is also a pool area. It is not large and appeared to be open to the general public who had a slightly-less-than-charming habit of eating and drinking in the pool and in the process washing cutlery in the pool and feeding dogs poolside. Needless to say, we did not use the pool for one second. All in all - choose this place for large, clean and charming rooms - and skip the food and the pool.

        “no second visit planned... ”
Well up a hillside and quite a way from the town. Need to be fit as it's steps everywhere, even to the swimming pool. Unhelpful reception, e.g. had to ask more than once for chairs for the terrace. Also, DON'T buy an internet card if you use Google or Yahoo! 6 PESO for nothing! Meals were manic: if you didn't get there early, there'd be a shortage of tables, then plates, then cutlery. Have you ever been offered COLD SPROUTS at breakfast - in fact, pretty well everything was cold. This hotel is more of a motel and a stopping-off point for coaches coming for evening meal, then B&B. On a more positive note: Bungalows were clean and comfortable; very quiet at night. Good shows every night - only lasted one hour but quite enjoyable. Trinidad town is interesting but would stay somewhere more central even if it meant paying more.

There was no handle on the toilet. We immediately requested another room. It was better but still run down and dirty. The third room was small but relatively clean. “Bit of a struggle to find a good room! ”
Well, the first room had water, but on the floor rather than in the sink. No chance of a change as the hotel was full ... Next morning the second room proved to have no view except a very-close-up of a palm tree .... the third room (A3) had a truly fantastic view (it's in the highest block, at the side, with nothing but view in front of it!). BUT the a/c rivalled standing on a runway at Heathrow; the safe, cleverly, had had its hinge bolts removed so that the door, when locked, could be lifted off; and the balcony door had such sharp edges that a cut hand ensued! The view persuaded us to stay put and fight - we were booked in for 5 nights, after all - and eventually we had a State Visit from the manager who had the a/c serviced, the safe changed and the door repaired and offered us an upgrade to a la carte in the posh(er) poolside restaurant. After all that, we settled in and had quite a good stay. The walk into town was great - downhill all the way - and the walk back ok if taken slowly - it is 15 very steep minutes! Other reviews on here speak of poor food ... we didn't find that at all. The breakfast buffet was good and varied, and the evening buffet absolutely fine (though the cats, dogs, birds etc are a little disconcerting). The restaurant staff are friendly and helpful and keen to exchange a smile rather than be barked at. Our upgrade time in the "posh" restaurant wasn't so good - the menu there is limited and the place a bit desolate. We would certainly go back, but would be more pro-active in checking the room before accepting it!

I had the opportunity to stay on this property as part of my people-to-people program. We stayed there from October 18-20, 2012. We had 6 rooms total. The front desk staff was very nice. They were being berated by a couple from the UK when we checked in but remained very professional and calm and offered to correct the issue with that couple but they were rude, loud and just wanted something for free, but the staff stayed calm. The views are beautiful. The rooms were ok. Window AC units that did keep the rooms cool and the temperatures were hot. We had the bungalow rooms that overlooked the views the best. The buffet was ok. They did change the selections which were nice. But the dogs and chickens and chicks wondered through the dining area. The hotel is on beautiful grounds. late at night the horses wondered through the property eating grass. The had entertainment (a magician and dancing.) the Magician.. well he wasn't very good, in my opinion, but the dancers were fine. It's Cuba.. it's not Jamaica, or the French Riviera or anything like that. So for where it is, what they offered and the area, it is a nice hotel. I would go back with my groups again.

We've been staying here as a final station of our cuba round-trip. The hotel is quite nice, there are roughly 100 small bungalows on a hill high above Trinidad city center. Our accomodation was in a good conditions, bed and bathrooms were fine, AC worked but was very loud. Before accepting the room, the bellboy checked all lights, fridge and water in the bathroom. The hotel is located on a hill site above Trinidad and thus offers a very good view to Trinidad as well as the Carribean sea. It is a good basis to discover the sorrounding area and make some short trips to "Valle de los ingenios" or tope de collantes. Food was OK, the pool area is pretty good. Don't miss the night-club las Cuevas which is just a few minutes walk away. It has a really great atmosphere.

We were traveling independently in Cuba and had booked this over the internet from the UK. We stayed 4 nights. The rooms were little cement cabins with good air conditioning. They were clean and had balconys. The pool was nice to have because it was very hot and humid (we were there in early June). Like any buffet meals the food gets a bit samey but I really liked all the cut up fruit. I am extremely anti-smoking and the only thing that bothered me is that they didn't stop people from smoking while they were standing in the swimming pool! Very different than western standards. But that's Cuba! Probably the best thing was the Cubatur lady who helps us with day trips, walking tours, taxis, etc. We had an excellent walking tour of Trinidad with a guide named Rafael. He was very knowledgable and helpful. We ate lunch at Sol Ananda in town off the main square (there are several squares). It is a living museum and it was excellent food. The live Cuban music added to the atmosphere.

The hotel is a little out of the way, and up a hill and some of the rooms/chalets are further uphill. The room was clean and the bathroom was adequate. The bar was a nice area, but the dinner buffet was awful and would avoid it like the plague. We had already paid for the meals with the room, would avoid this option if you can and eat elsewhere. The tour rep (think it was cubatur) in reception was really helpful and even recommended other places to eat. Arranged some great trips out and was very helpful. Probably would only stay here again if there was nowhere else to stay in town. Should have stayed at a casa!!

        “Dreadful Restaurant ”
The hotel is set on a steep hill which wasn't a problem once we found our way around, very difficult at night with insufficient lighting. The room was adequately furnished and spotlessly clean with a large balcony, shared with next door. The refrigerator was incredibly noisy and had to be turned off to get some sleep. The water from the shower was no more than a trickle and could barely be used. The restaurant is diabolical, it opens at 8:00pm and you have to get there early to get anything. There is very little choice and there was no attempt whatsoever to keep anything hot. Everything I tasted, other than the coffee, was pretty awful. Breakfast wasn't much better so I opted for a freshly cooked omelete which was OK but I was only allowed one egg. The service generally was poor but the restaurant staff were down right rude. Not a bad location for the heritage site provided you can climb the hill.

        “Cycle trip to Cuba”
Stayed as part of an Explore cycle trip. One of several chalet based hotels used. 10 mins walk into town. Room clean, bedding clean , Chambermaid had a thing for elaborate towel folding. Buffet breakfast and dinner, can get crowded. Fresh eggs cooked to oreder for breakfast as well as fruit, cold dishes etc. Dinner buffet adequate, cold dishes, a roast and a grilled in front of you dish, fish or meat different nights. Good place to explore the area esp Valley de los Ingenios great sunset from pool terrace, pool average. Staff friendly. Visited the market down town and some lovely hand embroidered work to be had.

“On the whole its OK ”
we stayed in three different cabin based hotels like this in Cuba and this was the best - that dosent mean its a great hotel, but the rooms were spacious and clean and the views fantastic. The staff were good and the buffet was certainly the best of all the 5 different hotels I tried (inc 2 in Havana). Its about 3/4 mile up the hill from Trinidad and visiting that town is a must on any Cuba tour. We stayed here 2 nights and i had no complaints (but i was getting acclimatised to Cuban standards by then)

        “OK but... ”
We stayed here for three nights in January 2012 as part of an organised tour of western Cuba and found it was perfectly adequate. As people have already commented, the hotel is a steep uphill haul from the town but the views across the countryside and town across to the sea are wonderful. Our accommodation was in two-storey blocks overlooking a small valley beside the hotel and consisted of a suite with a lounge area - sofa, chairs, TV and a door to a small balcony - and a bedroom area. There was a shower room, a washbasin and a wardrobe containing a safe. All perfectly adequate apart from the fact that the sheets were not quite large enough for the single beds we were sleeping in. So we had to choose...did we want the sheet to stretch to the end of the bed where our feet were and use the pillow to cover the top 30-40 cms of mattress at the top end or cover the top end of the mattress with the sheet and rest our feet on the uncovered mattress? The moral of the story is to always travel with a cotton sarong that can be used as clothing, a towel or a sheet! The staff were friendly and helpful - and the food was good. Spend a few minutes waiting and watching whilst the staff cook your breakfast eggs or meat for your evening meal and it will be both hot and fresh. Wine with dinner? Absolutely rip-off prices! Either go without or be prepared to pay up!

“Nice but you need to be fit to walk there from the Trinidad ”
After staying in the Plaza in Havana, this hotel was luxury ! Still very basic, more like Youth Hostel cabins but there was a nice bar and restaurant where the breakfast wasnt too bad, There is an exchange by the pool that is open till six so that you can exchange sterling to CUC's which was really useful. The accommodation was basic and the air con noisy but the location was lovely. I loved the pool and pool bar / snack bar and it was really nice to be able to sit by the pool with a Mojito and watch the sun go down at the end of the day. Amazing views. Hint - don't switch your light on on your room until you have gone in and closed the door otherwise your room will be full of flying beetles. Second night my bathroom played host to a lovely little green frog who was very pleased to be released back in to the wild. The hotel is located on the outskirts of Trinidad, and the walk is up a steep hill that could be very tiring during the day and was quite exhausting after a night of Salsa dancing in the Plaza Major. Maybe the Hotel should invest in a few Coco Taxis reserved for the residents. There is also a night club in the hotel grounds which is set in a cave, I didnt get there myself but some of my fellow travellers said it was pretty good but also quite a walk from the accommodation - which could be an advantage if you want a peaceful night. I would have like to stay here longer.

        “Absolutely beautiful ”
We really liked the hotel and the boungaloues. The staff was really friendly and informative. Its an amazing view (and area) where this hotel is based, and you can walk to central trinidad ? however its nto walking distance from the beach. As the hotel is up a hill you need to be in good shape to walk to/from the hotel. There is secutiry guars every where, which makes you feel safe. And when you go for a walk in the hotel area you can even ?bump? in to a beautiful horse on the grass in the area. Be sure to go to the Disco Cuevas ? no matter what age you are, its an experience! ?

        “Pleasant stay with nice surroundings.”
We stayed one night here as part of an organised tour of Cuba. The complex is on a hill and consists of a reception area and then a pool with bar and restaurant higher up with chalets scattered around. I think we were lucky as we had one of the upper chalets which were newer and from what other people said more comfortable. The room was small but basic with television, air conditioning, fridge and basic bathroom with shower. Water was hot and a faster trickle than most hotels we stayed at. We ate outside by the pool and although lots of flies around had quite a nice meal served to the table. After the meal there was a 'variety' show - not much variety - singers, dance and a magician who also came round the tables to show us his tricks - a basically claver pieces of carpentry which was his main job - ie a box that had a secret way of opening which he then sold - but it was worth it as he was entertaining. Breakfast was inside and fine although pretty basic but that is the norm and the longer one's holiday goes on the more one gets resigned to that fact. Overall I thought is was quite comfortable and would recommend a stay.

“Very nice and great location ”
I'm not at all sure why this has had such poor reviews. We thought it was very nice indeed, taking into consideration that even the best accommodation in Cuba is not up to the highest standards of European hotels. All the rooms are in separate little duplex style blocks. We had a lovely upper floor room with a balcony, air con and fridge. The swimming pool is nice, very clean, with a great view. The pool bar is very pleasant with lots of choice and good staff. The main bar is good with lots of outside seating space and a great view over Trinidad. The food (buffet style) is fine by Cuban standards. If you want fine dining, go to Paris. Location-wise, it's a few minutes pretty stroll from the centre of town. Unless you're mobility-impaired, the location is fantastic. I can imagine wheelchair users or the elderly would prefer somewhere closer and not on a (very scenic) hillside location.

“The best hotel we've been in Cuba ”
The hotel/bungalows are located on the hill with the view on Trynidad. About 20 minutes walk to the center. The hotel/bungalows are freshly renovated, very good standard (the best quality we?ve had among all visited hotels in Cuba), the rooms are spacious and clean. The swimming pool was bit small, there was separate pool for children, lots of sunbeds, couple of bars ? little expensive, small shop, very interesting evening performance programme, breakfast and dinner ? superb! The food choice was very big, very good quality, drinks for dinner extra paid (quite expensive).

“Lots of space, close to the town”
This hotel is close to the the gorgeous town of Trinidad, but it takes a walk uphill which can be very hard in the heat and sun. You can take a taxi from citycentre which will cost you between 4 and 6 CUC. The hotel is lovely, nice grounds, gardens, the rooms are in fact little houses, two under one roof, spacious, nice beds, very clean, a veranda with nice views from some of them. Staff was excellent, very helpfull, happy, patient when we wanted a room with a nice view, and visited several with us untill we found the perfect one. It was not yet cleaned, but hey, we were there at noon and in an hour it was all set. Lots of parking space close to your room. Lots of warm water, great towels. Nice swimming pool with lots of empty chairs. Only problem was the man in the garden the day we left who warned us our left tyre was flat. It wasn't. So we took off. But at the petrolstation our right tyre was a bit flat........ What a coincidence? It appeared there was no leak, maybe someone let some air out? to create some work for a friend?

        “High on a Hill! ”
This is a very comfortable chalet roomed hotel set in very pleasant and well kept grounds. The central reception/bar area is very pleasant. If you are intending to spend some time in the wonderful town of Trinidad, be advised it is about a mile each way to the centre and back is up hill! The complex has a pool but on the busy Ramblers schedule we didnt make use of it. If you arrive after dark as we did, finding the rooms is not always easy till you get used to the numbering system. Very nice front and rear patio /sun areas to all rooms with recliners

“Good hotel on a hill, 15 min's walk from the center ”
We stayed at the Las Cuevas last year during a round trip in Cuba. The hotel is located on a hill on the side of the center of Trinidad. We took our rental car and found it in once. You can walk into Trinidad in about 15 minutes, so it is a little walk. We actually liked the hotel to be a little way out of the center, because it was nie and quiet at night. And we didn't mind the walk after dinner. It is a good hotel, quite big and the rooms are clean. All rooms have balconies and some have a great view over Trinidad. breakfast is OK, seeing the Cuban food is just not that great most of the time. But they take effort. We did not have dinner in the restaurant, so can't say anything about that.

        “Enjoyable stay ”
We stayed here with our 4 year old son. We found the hotel to be good, apart from the water pressure, really bad just a trickle from the shower, hardly enough to get my hair wet never mind rinse it! Staff were friendly and helpful and we liked the pool. Breakfast and dinner buffet not too impressive, but not the worst. Get to dinner early as can get hard to find a table. Good location for visiting Trinidad.

“Nice location and good grub! ”
We arrived here from a terrible hotel in Santa Clara, so it felt like Christmas. Really lovely - great food (they charge for the beer and wine, but it is cheap and who cares?) - our room was in a nice location by the pool. Some of the little cabins seemed a bit stuck in the middle of nowhere - I would request a poolside room if I were to go again. Really big room and v clean. Friendly staff - poolside bar and good bank all on hand. The outside terrace by the restaurant is perfect for viewing the sunset - a great moment on the holiday. Great - can't fault it!
