Vinales National Park, Pinar del Rio. Cuba

Viñales National Park is around 118 miles (190 kilometers) west of the city of Havana. UNESCO has declared it to be a world heritage site because of the way its natural features have been integrated with the activities that the valley’s farmers have engaged in over the centuries. Viñales National Park contains the best karst valleys in Cuba. Their impressive pincushion hills (tall, rounded, flat-topped heights with vertical sides) stand in sharp contrast to the red-soil plains at their bases.

This area contains the oldest rocks in the country, and many fossils of marine reptiles, mollusks and fish from the Jurassic Period have been found here. In addition, there are many caves, the most important of which is Gran Caverna de Santo Tomás, a national monument and one of the largest caves in Latin America. The plants that grow on the pincushion hills and palma corchos (Microcycas calocoma), veritable fossil plants that have survived from distant geological eras, are among the most interesting vegetation in the park.

Vinales National Park is located in Pinar del Rio

Because of the richness, variety and excellent preservation of its flora and fauna, Pinar del Río is called "the garden of Cuba." UNESCO has declared the Guanahacabibes Peninsula and the Rosario Mountain Range biosphere reserves, and the Viñales Valley a world cultural heritage. The land in which the world's best tobacco is grown also offers you wonderful opportunities for scuba diving, hunting, fishing or simply relaxing and tanning at the beach.,

Since the 19th century, Havana residents have been drawn by the natural beauty of Vueltabajo, and they have flocked to Los Portales Cave, to San Diego de los Baños, to receive the benefits of its mineral-medicinal and thermal waters; and to the Viñales Valley, to gaze at its natural beauty.,

Pinar del Río is just 174 km (108 miles) from Havana. A good highway links the two cities. The architecture in its historic center is eclectic, and its low houses in gentle colors, whose porches seem to form an endless gallery, have great charm. On the outskirts of the city, modern buildings break its horizontal lines. ,

When visiting Pinar del Río's provincial capital, be sure to tour the Guayabita del Pinar Distillery, where the drink of the same name is still made by hand, following an age-old recipe; the Guash Palace, the Milanés Theater and the Rumayor Cabaret.,

Quiet, comfortable hotels have been built in some of the most beautiful spots in Pinar del Río, to facilitate your enjoyment of Nature. Cayo Levisa has a delightful, sunny beach, and the province also offer excellent opportunities for scuba diving, hunting and fishing.

Viñales Pinar del Rio
The Vinales Valley is situated in the Sierra de los Organos area in Cuba and is a karst depression. This valley lies just to the north of the town of Vinales, a province of Pinar del Rio, which is considered to be one of the greenest provinces in Cuba. The Vinales Valley was recently added to UNESCO’s world heritage list and is a very popular tourist attraction, although it is still possible to find isolated spots in the region. The most popular geographic features of the Vinales Valley are the mogotes, which are hills with round tops that were present even during the Jurassic Viñales ValleyPeriod. The Mogotes of Vinales are characterised by their rich vegetation, which includes a range of different plant species. The formation of the mogote is thought to have been caused by the erosion of a plateau owing to a series of underground rivers over millions of years. The Vinales town is quiet and peaceful and forms a sharp contrast to Havana, which is 180 kilometres away. There are many tobacco and coffee plantations in the region, which still follow ancient agricultural practices. While the rest of Cuba is well known for their beaches and colonial architecture, the Vinales Valley alone stands out from the rest. It provides a great retreat from the city, with idyllic villages, caves, stalactites and stalagmites and underground rivers.
