  • El Nicho is located in Cienfuegos
  •

French émigrés from Bordeaux and Louisiana founded the settlement of Fernandina de Jagua on a large, calm bay on the Caribbean Sea on April 22, 1819. In 1830, when it was upgraded to a town, its name was changed to Cienfuegos, in honor of José Cienfuegos, the Governor-General of Cuba. Fifty years later, it was proclaimed a city and, for its beauty, was called "the pearl of the south." By the end of the 19th century, it had become the fourth most important city in the country.,

Considered the crowning jewel of Cuban architectural in the 19th century, Cienfuegos stands out for the perfect design of its streets and for the refinement and good taste of the buildings in the historic center of the city, which has been declared a national monument. When visiting, stop by the Casa del Fundador (the Founder's House); Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción (Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception) Cathedral; the Tomás Terry Theater; the Ferrer Palace; and the José Martí Park, which contains the only arch of triumph in Cuba.,

Other attractions include the Prado Promenade, the Valle Palace, the museums of Naval and Provincial History, and the Reina (Queen's) Cemetery.,

Farther out from the center of the city, tour the Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Jagua (Jagua for short) Fortress, the Tomás Acea Cemetery and the Botanical Gardens.,

In addition to these cultural and historic attractions, Cienfuegos has excellent facilities for scuba diving and other water sports, nature tourism and thermal baths.

    “Expensive, but don't expect a lot ”
If you happen to travel there with your own (rental) car, they pick you some $ 9.- for the parking, and the entrance fee. So you would expect a great attraction. You walk some 20 minutes uphill until you stay under a waterfall, which, yes for Cubans it is an attraction; for Cubans. There is a restaurant near the parking... More

    “Finally some cool water ”
That is great that you can not only see the waterfalls but you can actually swim and have fun around there. Water is refreshing. But it has also negative side - place is crowded and full of noisy children.

    “Beautiful scenery ”
It was great to be able to swim in some sweet water after all the salt of the seas. Walk a bit further up to avoid the crowds.

    “Refreshing pools and waterfalls ”
El Nicho is well worth the detour. The park-employee guided tour was a big plus - learned lots about the multiple uses of the amazing local flora. This area is in the higher elevations of the Topes de Collantes, but route-wize is closer to Cienfuegos. The Cubanacan tour uses semi-open Russian trucks - very 'cool'. Wear good shoes, and bring... “very nice ”
tip: go very early, then you can swim alone. Go also to the waterfalls across the road, they are also beautiful and there are less tourists. No guide needed.

    “A special place ”
A really great day out and can be reached from Cienfuegos or Trinidad (a little bit further) - or visit it via a detour when traveling between Cienfuegos and Trinidad. It's not more than a 15 minute hike uphill (but not that strenuous) from the car park and the highlights are the waterfalls, great views and the wonderful refreshing natural... More

“Part of overnight Trinidad tour-thomas cook ”
Situated some where close to Cien fuegos, a short 45min taxi to about 800ft above sea level. Met with a local guide who took the group up to waterfall whilst advising us on local plant life such as coffee, orange trees and the massive avocado fruit. Took several beautiful pictures of the waterfall with over 2jump pools where locals indulge... More
