Rating Scale Model of Havana
Only inferior to a similar one in New York, the Scale Model of Havana is, due to its dimensions, the second largest in the world. The 727 square kilometers of the city are represented in relief in an area of 22 meters of length and 10 meters of width.
This colossal miniature was inaugurated in 1995, among other reasons, because of the need to reflect the impressive physical and cultural patrimony of Havana, kept during its almost five centuries as a port city and capital of Cuba.
The different periods of constructions of the buildings are displayed through the use of different colors. Brown represents the colonial period, ochre the republican period, ivory the revolutionary period, and white represents the projects, the sculptural monuments and cemeteries.
It has more than 30 boards. With the use of textures and colors similar to the natural ones, the vegetation, parks, beaches and plazas are distinguished.
The Scale Model of HavanaThe origin of the Model was thanks to the Group for the Integral Development of the Capital and among the professionals who carried out the project are experienced specialists. They took into account models like the ones in Moscow, Berlin, New York, Cadiz, Rotterdam and Stockholm for the creation of the prototype.
With its tiny representations, the Model waits for us through the main lobby, in which a ceramic mural 12 meters long and 4 meters wide is displayed, showing an artistic set of Cuban flags created by the Italian designer Stellana Poletti.
There are exhibitions related with the environment and similar topics in its rooms and gardens, as well as cultural and children’s activities.

Scale Model of Havana is located in Havana
Capital of Cuba and the country's administrative, political, cultural and scientific center, it is also the capital of two provinces: City of Havana and Havana. Though only around 280 square miles (727 square kilometers) in size-0.65 percent of the archipelago's total area.
The Old Havana and system of forts led UNESCO to declare it a part of world heritage in 1982. Founded on its present site in 1519, the settlement of San Cristobal de La Habana prospered mainly due to its bay, which was a natural port of call for ships sailing to and from the New World. Starting in 1634, because of its strategic location, San Cristobal de La Habana was considered the key to the New World-as attested to by royal letters patent-and the main defense of the West Indies.
The Cuban capital consists of an immense number of buildings in a wide range of architectural styles, built in the course of nearly five centuries. These styles range from the pre-baroque to the baroque, neo-Gothic, neoclassical, eclectic, art noveau and art-deco, to the modern.
Alejo Carpentier, one of Cuba's most famous authors, called it "the city of columns" and focused attention on its streets, which he considered a perennially rich show of life, humanity and contrasts that was bound to entertain any observer.
Over 14 kilometers of excellent beaches lie to the east of the Cuban capital. To the south, a green belt contributes to a healthful atmosphere.

This scaled-down
This scaled-down replica of Havana is surpassed in size only by the one in New York City. It reproduces 144 square kilometers of the city, with buildings made out of cedar wood and streets of colored paper and sponges. A team of architects, designers and model constructors worked on this project for many years. The group meticulously measured, photographed and recorded every detail of the city, including its trees, pavements, lampposts, traffic lights and much more.
“Maqueta closed ”
In mid-May 2012, I visited the site of Maqueta de la Habana and found the gates closed and locked with chains. My driver asked around and was told the building is closed for remodeling with no indication when it will re-open.
