  • Description Areas of Natural Interest: Vinales National Park, Pinar del Rio. Cuba

Viñales National Park is around 118 miles (190 kilometers) west of the city of Havana. UNESCO has declared it to be a world heritage site because of the way its natural features have been integrated with the activities that the valley’s farmers have engaged in over the centuries. Viñales National Park contains the best karst valleys in Cuba. Their impressive pincushion hills (tall, rounded, flat-topped heights with vertical sides) stand in sharp contrast to the red-soil plains at their bases.

This area contains the oldest rocks in the country, and many fossils of marine reptiles, mollusks and fish from the Jurassic Period have been found here. In addition, there are many caves, the most important of which is Gran Caverna de Santo Tomás, a national monument and one of the largest caves in Latin America. The plants that grow on the pincushion hills and palma corchos (Microcycas calocoma), veritable fossil plants that have survived from distant geological eras, are among the most interesting vegetation in the park.

  • Vinales National Park is located in Pinar del Rio
  • Because of the richness, variety and excellent preservation of its flora and fauna, Pinar del Río is called "the garden of Cuba." UNESCO has declared the Guanahacabibes Peninsula and the Rosario Mountain Range biosphere reserves, and the Viñales Valley a world cultural heritage. The land in which the world's best tobacco is grown also offers you wonderful opportunities for scuba diving, hunting, fishing or simply relaxing and tanning at the beach.,

Since the 19th century, Havana residents have been drawn by the natural beauty of Vueltabajo, and they have flocked to Los Portales Cave, to San Diego de los Baños, to receive the benefits of its mineral-medicinal and thermal waters; and to the Viñales Valley, to gaze at its natural beauty.,

Pinar del Río is just 174 km (108 miles) from Havana. A good highway links the two cities. The architecture in its historic center is eclectic, and its low houses in gentle colors, whose porches seem to form an endless gallery, have great charm. On the outskirts of the city, modern buildings break its horizontal lines. ,

When visiting Pinar del Río's provincial capital, be sure to tour the Guayabita del Pinar Distillery, where the drink of the same name is still made by hand, following an age-old recipe; the Guash Palace, the Milanés Theater and the Rumayor Cabaret.,

Quiet, comfortable hotels have been built in some of the most beautiful spots in Pinar del Río, to facilitate your enjoyment of Nature. Cayo Levisa has a delightful, sunny beach, and the province also offer excellent opportunities for scuba diving, hunting and fishing.

    Vinales National Park
Occupying an area of 132 km2 in the Sierra de los Organos, the National Park Viñales Valley highlights for the existence of impressive mountains of vertical hillsides and rounded summits covered by abundant vegetation known as hillocks. Particularly interesting are, also, the great quantity of existent caves in their environment that award him a great attractiveness from the point of view of the study of the land origin.

    Viñales Pinar del Rio
The Vinales Valley is situated in the Sierra de los Organos area in Cuba and is a karst depression. This valley lies just to the north of the town of Vinales, a province of Pinar del Rio, which is considered to be one of the greenest provinces in Cuba. The Vinales Valley was recently added to UNESCO’s world heritage list and is a very popular tourist attraction, although it is still possible to find isolated spots in the region. The most popular geographic features of the Vinales Valley are the mogotes, which are hills with round tops that were present even during the Jurassic Viñales ValleyPeriod. The Mogotes of Vinales are characterised by their rich vegetation, which includes a range of different plant species. The formation of the mogote is thought to have been caused by the erosion of a plateau owing to a series of underground rivers over millions of years. The Vinales town is quiet and peaceful and forms a sharp contrast to Havana, which is 180 kilometres away. There are many tobacco and coffee plantations in the region, which still follow ancient agricultural practices. While the rest of Cuba is well known for their beaches and colonial architecture, the Vinales Valley alone stands out from the rest. It provides a great retreat from the city, with idyllic villages, caves, stalactites and stalagmites and underground rivers.

    Viñales National Park
The National Park Viñales is located in the western half of the Guaniguanico Mountain range in the Pinar del Rio province, it occupies an area of 21 600 hectares and it includes inside its limits to the low heights of the Sierra of the Organs. These elevations, with a high grade of conservation of their natural state, are considered the formations domestic more important cársicas and in them different units of vegetation are developed among those that stand out the humid mesophyllous evergreen forest and the semideciduous mesophyll forest. They are plentiful in the area, the caves systems like that of Santo Tomás and that of Palmarito, two of the most extensive of the Latin America. Viñales National ParkParque Nacional Viñales

    Viñales National Park
Declared as Cultural Landscape for the UNESCO presents a heterogeneous and endemic flora as it is the case the ceibón (Bombax emarginatum), the Palmita de la Sierra (Gaussia princeps), the Oak Cayman (Ekmanhianthes actinophilla) and the Microcycas Calocoma, commonly denominated as "Cork Palm" (Palma Corcho), endemic of vat, it plants similar to a palm, of the families of the rutáceas considered by their antiquity like alive fossil, to maintain, their evolutionary characters defined in the Cretaceous. Also stores extraordinary you floristic value of some a thousand well-known species, of which are exclusive more than 30%. The fauna studies in the Park have a great delay with relationship to the flora and the vegetation, due to the difficult access to the mogotes. It is considered that groups exist very well represented and with high endemic among those that stand out, the mollusks, the reptiles and the amphibians. The avifauna is very well represented by autochthonous species and of high endemic pancubano and of smaller restriction, although local endemismos cannot be mentioned. A considerable underground fauna exists mainly with high endemic securities in the hot caves. The spineless ones have been little studied, but it is recognized in general that important endemic exists in the ants, butterflies and insects, even, new species for the science. Their avifauna, represented for more than 30 species or subspecieses, it sustains this stamp engalanador: The Mellisuga helenae or "zunzuncito", The Priotelus temnurus or "tocororo", The Multicolored Todus or "cartacuba", The Miadestes elisabeth or "ruiseñor (nightingale)", The melodious Tiaris Canora or "tomeguín del pinar" and The Mimus polyglotos or "sinsonte (mockingbird)". The superficial karstic relief that prevails in the National Park, together to the wealth in underground ways allows to consider it as the classic area of the study of the tropical carso of the planet, for the many manifestations of this relief; in their conical carso and of domes, they meet the big caves systems with great interest espeleológico: The Cave of Indian crossed by the river San Vicente, the Cave of The Cable, the Cave of the Sijú, and that of more interest, beauty and extension, Santo Tomás, great cavern with more than 45 Km of galleries; as well as others of interest and singularity, taking the visitor an impressive vision of the area, in their interior. Many of the underground cavities pick up for the history, prints of clans indocubanos, which didn't build housings in this territory, but rather they were sheltered in these natural refuges. These aboriginal cultures have left their impronta in residuary with rudimentary utensils, cemeteries and some manifestations of the art rupestre. Inside the National Park Viñales this The Valley of Viñales, one of the good known and attractive areas of Cuba, occupies an area of 111. 19 km², it has an exceptional landscape that among other characteristics, is unique for the spectacular combination of its natural beauty, preservation of the environment and the harmonious actions of men on small fruit crops, forage, and specially tobacco plantations, whose traditional methods for planting and production make Cuban cigars to be famous worldwide and known as top quality cigars

    Viñales Valley
The Viñales Valley has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since November 1999 as a cultural landscape enriched by traditional farm and village architecture. Old-fashioned farming methods are still used in Viñales, notably to grow tobacco. The local population is an ethnic mix that illustrates the cultural development of the Caribbean and Cuba in particular.

    Cuba’s greatest natural
One of Cuba’s greatest natural attractions, was declared a National Natural Monument for its remarkable landscapes. The valley has a surface area of 132 km2 and is a part of Sierra de los Organos, in Pinar del Río province. It is the finest example of a karst valley in Cuba, where mogotes, knolls with rounded tops and steep slopes, contrast harmoniously with the flat surface of the valley where they stand. Deep in the valley bottom you find cultivated lands-mainly tobacco, taro and bananas-and scattered peasant houses, all forming a rural landscape of great beauty. The surrounding sierras abound in caves, making it an area of speleological interest. Outstanding among them are Cueva del Indio, a cave which San Vicente River runs through, and Cueva de José Miguel. Further west, the Santo Tomás cave system, criss-crossed by 45 km of galleries, is one of the largest in Hispanic America. The flora is an important element in Viñales. Cuban endemic plants found there include: the ceibón tree (Bombax emarginatum), palmita de sierra (Thrinax microcarpa), cayman oak (Ekmanianthes actinophylla) and a kind of palm tree (Mycrocycas calocoma)-a living Jurassic fossil that can only be found in a small area of Pinar del Río. There are also many endemic animal species, especially birds like hummingbirds, the Cuban trogon (Priotelus temnurus), tody (Todus multicolor), mockingbird (Cuban solitaire) and a small paserine bird that inhabits pinewoods.

    “Real Cuba ”
Wonderful scenery, few catual visitors with some day trippers from Havana but few tour groups due mainly to adequate western standard hotels. But that is the fun and sacrifice you have to make to enjoy several days in such beautiful surroundings and circulating with the farming folk and real Cubans.

Amazing scenery. Better if you go on your own or a small minibus which we'll be doing next time we visit because the whole area is worth a repeat visit just to explore & enjoy the area at your own pace.

“A must see in Cuba ”
We only went on a daytour from Havana, and if this is what you have time to do (not staying multiple days) then do it. Try to book a daytour on a small bus/minivan. The experience is so much better. We did different activities during the day, including a visit to a tobaccofarm, cavewalking etc.

“Rural Cuba at its best ”
A trip to Vinales with at least 1 overnight is definitely worth it. One of the premier tobacco growing regions in the world, Vinales is also beautifully situated. Take a horseback ride through the valley, stop at a tobacco plantation, drink some amazing home grown coffee, explore a cave, and jump into a refreshing lake.
