  • Description Cuban Keys: Cayo Levisa, Pinar del Rio. Cuba

Three kilometers of excellent beaches and 23 diving sites turn Cayo Levisa into an excellent destination for diving enthusiasts, who can enjoy crystal-clear waters and one of the world's largest coral reefs. The coral reef is inhabited by 500 species of fish, 200 species of sponges and large populations of mollusks, crustaceans and other marine animals.

Many kinds of corals, gorgonias, sea fans, and several species of fish, including stone bass and red snapper, as well as crustaceans like lobsters, also live in the region. A particular attraction in the area is the existence of trigonias, which are considered the oldest living fossils in Cuba.

The spectacular environment around the installation is very well preserved since access is very limited ( only by boat you can reach the key ) and it is one of the preferred diving areas for scuba diving lovers visiting Cuba. The cabins are well equipped with air conditioners and cold/hot water showers, and a snack bar or a restaurant will serve you good meals after your dive or snorkelling expeditions.

Also, Cayo Levisa a pristine key, where Hemingway hid his boat "The Pilar" while harassing the German submarines lurking in the Caribbean waters during WW II. Although Hemingway did not have the opportunity to engage the enemy, this adventure inspired one of his last novels "Island in the Stream". Check in At the Cayo Levisa Hotel for 1 night stay. The rest of the time is at leisure to explore Hemingway's haunts in the area or relax and enjoy the beach and the water.

  • Cayo Levisa is located in Pinar del Rio
  • Because of the richness, variety and excellent preservation of its flora and fauna, Pinar del Río is called "the garden of Cuba." UNESCO has declared the Guanahacabibes Peninsula and the Rosario Mountain Range biosphere reserves, and the Viñales Valley a world cultural heritage. The land in which the world's best tobacco is grown also offers you wonderful opportunities for scuba diving, hunting, fishing or simply relaxing and tanning at the beach.,

Since the 19th century, Havana residents have been drawn by the natural beauty of Vueltabajo, and they have flocked to Los Portales Cave, to San Diego de los Baños, to receive the benefits of its mineral-medicinal and thermal waters; and to the Viñales Valley, to gaze at its natural beauty.,

Pinar del Río is just 174 km (108 miles) from Havana. A good highway links the two cities. The architecture in its historic center is eclectic, and its low houses in gentle colors, whose porches seem to form an endless gallery, have great charm. On the outskirts of the city, modern buildings break its horizontal lines. ,

When visiting Pinar del Río's provincial capital, be sure to tour the Guayabita del Pinar Distillery, where the drink of the same name is still made by hand, following an age-old recipe; the Guash Palace, the Milanés Theater and the Rumayor Cabaret.,

Quiet, comfortable hotels have been built in some of the most beautiful spots in Pinar del Río, to facilitate your enjoyment of Nature. Cayo Levisa has a delightful, sunny beach, and the province also offer excellent opportunities for scuba diving, hunting and fishing.

Only 35 minutes by boat from the northern coast of Pinar del Rio province, a natural paradise can be found. Cayo Levisa offers an unspoiled environment, 3 km (2 m) of excellent beaches for those wishing to dive into its transparent waters, and one of the greatest coral reefs in the world.

    Cayo Lavisa was good
All the places we went to in Cuba were very enjoyable, but it was most memorable for the people we met in Cuba. Other highlights of the trip were the sounds and colours in Havana, and the beach in Cayo Lavisa was breathtaking.

    Good Restaurant there
There are different reasons why you should go to this restaurant, which is actually part of the delicious hotel of an island, situated on Pinar del Rio’s north coast: the level of its food, criollo and marine, is more than just acceptable; the place is original and quiet, it’s beach, without exaggeration, a real paradise. Unfortunately, or maybe not, its tables are almost exclusively occupied by the guests of the hotel. Probably the majority doesn’t know that they can have lunch and dinner there without staying overnight, just by taking a little boat that sets them over.

    “Beautiful island ”
It is the second time in three years I visit the islands, and yes it is beautiful. Beaches forever, mangroves, turquoise warm waters. Snorkeling is fun too, you go out with a boat and park by the corals for an hour. But be warned, it is a place only for tourists ( you need your passport as Cubans are not... More

    “Get away from everything ”
We were out of high season and it was very quiet - even the day trippers didn't make much of a crowd. Takes half hour to walk beach end to end, very clean. Minimal but sufficient activities for a ~3day stay. Snorkelling 18CUC for shared boat ride and 1 hr in water with divers and other snorkelers. Reef visibility clear,... More

“Lovely beach - a bit far for a day trip ”
This beach is really beautiful and quiet. We did a day tour here from Vinales with Cubanacan which works out at 35CUC each including lunch. Its an hour bus from Vinales then a wait then a half hour boat ride to the Cayo. If you want to go to the beach for a day from Vinales Id recommend Cayo Jutias... More

“Wonderful island , but came home with a rash. ”
We did a day trip to Cayo Levisa from Vinales, which was excellent value, included bus, ferry and lunch and a full day on the beach, which was beautiful and uncrowded. The only down side was that the next day I came out in a rash of red itchy sores which lasted a good week. This despite a good covering... More

    “Scubadiving at Cayo Levisa ”
You can scuba dive the house reef at 11:45 AM. The ferry arrives at 10:30 AM. The dive boat leave at 9 AM for other dive sites. This mean that you as a day-tourist can't dive the external/outer dive sites :-( Jorn S. Larsen (Denmark)

We spent a day on Cajo Levisa and we enjoyed every minite there. We went on a snorkeling trip and could see a lot of beautiful fishes and we enjoyed a desert beach with warm see away from the resort. The sand is white and the see is turquoise and transparent. The only point which could have been better is... More

“Among the best Caribbean beaches ”
This beach is a fantastic place to spend a day, walking over the mangroves and discovering the wildlife. The sand is white, and in the mangroves, there is a fair amount of wildlife to see, from turtles to crabs and birds. The restaurant/bar provides reasonable lunch and drinks. If travelling from Vinales, make sure to travel through Pons, and not... More
