The Bodeguita del Medio oozes history and suffers from over popularity. Still, it is pretty much a must-visit for any first time trip to Havana. The collage of famous photos and signatures that crowd the walls here are legend. You'll definitely want a reservation, although even with a reservation, you'll probably end up waiting for a table--this place is just that popular. Tradition would have you start things off with a mojito, although the mojitos here are notoriously weak. Definitely order one with 3- or 5-year old añejo rum if you plan on enjoying it. The food, simple and well prepared Cuban dishes, is pretty good.

The slow-roasted pork is my favorite, although the ropa vieja (shredded beef) gives it a run for its money. No matter what you order, make sure you have it served with plenty of yuca with mojo and the arroz morro, black beans with rice. This place is crowded and rowdy, so don't come expecting anything less.

La Bodeguita del Medio is located in Havana

Capital of Cuba and the country's administrative, political, cultural and scientific center, it is also the capital of two provinces: City of Havana and Havana. Though only around 280 square miles (727 square kilometers) in size-0.65 percent of the archipelago's total area.

The Old Havana and system of forts led UNESCO to declare it a part of world heritage in 1982. Founded on its present site in 1519, the settlement of San Cristobal de La Habana prospered mainly due to its bay, which was a natural port of call for ships sailing to and from the New World. Starting in 1634, because of its strategic location, San Cristobal de La Habana was considered the key to the New World-as attested to by royal letters patent-and the main defense of the West Indies.

The Cuban capital consists of an immense number of buildings in a wide range of architectural styles, built in the course of nearly five centuries. These styles range from the pre-baroque to the baroque, neo-Gothic, neoclassical, eclectic, art noveau and art-deco, to the modern.

Alejo Carpentier, one of Cuba's most famous authors, called it "the city of columns" and focused attention on its streets, which he considered a perennially rich show of life, humanity and contrasts that was bound to entertain any observer.

Over 14 kilometers of excellent beaches lie to the east of the Cuban capital. To the south, a green belt contributes to a healthful atmosphere.

Review about Restaurants: La Bodeguita del Medio
Excellent bartolo

la bodeguita del medio
Try the roast pork at this traditional Cuban restaurant, renowned for its mojitos. No wonder it was a favourite Hemingway haunt

Excellent Tolon

La Bodeguita del Medio
Despite the international renown of La Bodeguita del Medio the actual food is generally a bit of a letdown. The place is worth stopping by for a mohito in the attached bar (although bear in mind you will be cheek to jowl with camera touting tourists). The restaurant does retain a certain ambience even though the best tables are reserved for Sammy Davis Junior amongst others.

Excellent Juan

Mi mojito en la Bodeguita
My main reason for wanting to go to Havana in the first place was to visit all the sites that American writer Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) had once visited and made popular. Hemingway spent quite a few years in Cuba and his love for this island gave birth to such amazing novels as "The Old Man and the Sea" and "Islands in the Stream". So of course, La Bodeguita del Medio was at the very top of my to-do list! This charming little joint is located just a few steps away from the Plaza de la Catedral. When we got there, the place was crowded with people from all over the world and musicians were playing traditional Cuban music. We had to pay 8 CUC for two mojitos but they were hands down the best mojitos we drank during our entire trip (and we drank several!) and the atmosphere was unbeatable. A truly great experience!
