City Museum is located in Havana

Capital of Cuba and the country's administrative, political, cultural and scientific center, it is also the capital of two provinces: City of Havana and Havana. Though only around 280 square miles (727 square kilometers) in size-0.65 percent of the archipelago's total area.

The Old Havana and system of forts led UNESCO to declare it a part of world heritage in 1982. Founded on its present site in 1519, the settlement of San Cristobal de La Habana prospered mainly due to its bay, which was a natural port of call for ships sailing to and from the New World. Starting in 1634, because of its strategic location, San Cristobal de La Habana was considered the key to the New World-as attested to by royal letters patent-and the main defense of the West Indies.

The Cuban capital consists of an immense number of buildings in a wide range of architectural styles, built in the course of nearly five centuries. These styles range from the pre-baroque to the baroque, neo-Gothic, neoclassical, eclectic, art noveau and art-deco, to the modern.

Alejo Carpentier, one of Cuba's most famous authors, called it "the city of columns" and focused attention on its streets, which he considered a perennially rich show of life, humanity and contrasts that was bound to entertain any observer.

Over 14 kilometers of excellent beaches lie to the east of the Cuban capital. To the south, a green belt contributes to a healthful atmosphere.

Review about Museums: City Museum
Very good Diego

Museum of the Havana City
It is located at the former headquarters of the Generals of the Army (Capitanes Generales) of the Island during the colonization. It has collections that illustrate a historical background of the city since it was founded up to the present times. The most important rooms exhibit the Cuban wars for the national independence.

“Beautiful, but could not learn much due to language barrier ”
I don't speak Spanish, so this palace was not the place to be able to learn anything about the history as guided tours are only in Spainsh. We did have a guide with us, but it was more trouble than it was worth. Gorgeous views and inexpensive, but I prefer the square and the ambiance outstide the palace.

“Lovely building, poor museum ”
The building is wonderful but learnt nothing about the history of Havana. It has lots of items, china, firearms, throne room but half the rooms were closed off, no rooms were labeled and we got conned for 2 CUC by 2 of the staff to take photos of us in throne room. (which we had read about before went in)... More

“a must for history lovers ”
The building itself is beautiful, but I also enjoyed the many interesting displays of colonial furnishings and decorative arts. You can get a good idea of what the city was like in colonial times and also enjoy the peace and quiet of the museum when you want a break from the crazy noise and street activity in Old Havana, or... “I didn't expect this.... ”
I just thought I was entering this building to see the courtyard in the middle but it's actually a museum in an old of a palace with all the room restored and displaying the period furniture and artworks. Brilliant and worth the visit.

“Great museum for colonial heritage ”
Don't miss the throne room on your tour of this museum. It was intended for visits from the King of Spain, but sadly he never came. The Gold Room is where the governor of the city greeted his guests , gold furniture and delicate porcelain. Only some of the rooms have been restored but it does give you a feel... More

“Also known as the Museo de La Cuidad ”
Just on the Plaza de Armas this museum is a "must see" even if you have just a short time to spare. It's based around a central courtyard with rooms over two floors. The rooms are full of interesting furniture, art and ........... find time to go -you won't regret it.

“An interesting museum, but the building itself is the treasure ”
This building houses El Museo de la Cuidad (the city museum). It has a fascinating, traditional architecture with a nice central courtyard with plants and statues. The rooms are all filled with historical artifacts, including art, furniture, clothing and spectacular chandeliers. A very nice place to visit! But don't plan to use the facilities unless you are fearless and not... More

“Fascinating displays ”
Some fascinating bits of colonial historic material - arms and so on - uniforms too. Look at the small sizes of most of the uniforms compared to today's average soldier. Beware of the women guides who may try to con you into something. We were there March 25th and two women sort of hustled me into a room with lots... More

“Wonderful review of pre-1930s Havana and Cuba ”
This museum occupies a very old 2 story government building on the Plaza d'Armas in Old Havana/Habana Vieja at the foot of pedestrian-only Obispo Street. It's filled with old carriages, relucs, gravestones, implements, swords, firearms, fully decorated rooms of the higher classes, art, artifacts, flags, paintings, drawings, photos, original relics of the struggle against the Spanish and of the Spanish-American war... “Lovely building. Beware the attendants! ”
Fairly compact and manageable, this Museum has some interesting exhibits, but the star attraction is the building itself. The verandah overlooking the statue of columbus in the courtyard is delightful. However, the attempts that the uniformed lady attendents make to get your cash is not what you'd expect from museum staff. Still worth the entrance fee though

“Really surprising ”
At first we thought, O well another old building which you can visit. On the last day we decided to look inside and it really surprised us. Beautiful decorated rooms and we also had a well speaking english guide, it was great to see. The tour lasted about an hour, because we looked long to every beautiful furniture and artefacts.... “Fell in love ”
This museum was my favorite stop at Havana. The beautiful sculptures it contains just takes your breath away. You will also see some interesting art and furniture. There is so much to see and take in. Regardless if how much you have got to spare, you have to a stop by.

Excellent m v

We stopped by accident as we did with several stops this trip. Very worth it. This is no longer called the ¨Palacio De Los Capitanes Generales¨ it is called El Museo de la Ciudad. Make sure you take the guided tour. It´s just a few CUC more but its highly worth it. There is a tremendous amount of information in... More
