Cayo Guillermo is particularly well known for its fishing as its waters have helped many a novice fisherman catch a barracuda or two over time. One of the most popular beaches on the island, and all of Cuba, is the Playa Pilar beach. The beach gets its name from Ernest Hemingway’s yacht, the Pilar. Hemingway was a big fan of the island and referred to it in his literary works as well. In terms of non-water related activities for tourists on the island, there are plenty of options including salsa classes and jeep trips. You could also go on one of the many island tours on offer, hike along a well-worn trails, sun bathe on the beach or even go bowling at the local bowling alley.

The twin islands
The twin islands of Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco are known more for their beaches and coastline than for their man-made landmarks. Just over the causeway is the old town of Morón, where a quaint selection of historic colonial buildings reside. One that stands out in particular is the Morón Railway Station, which dates back to 1924 and features a glorious stained-glass ceiling, a period telephone booth and a yearly festival each December, celebrating the arrival of the steam locomotive.
