Silence, concentration, a nature-scented fresh aroma wafting around the halls and foyers of this factory, hemmed in by manicured tropical gardens in the neighborhood of Siboney. It’s there where the Cohiba brand, with its array of lines and vitolas, is made.

Paying a visit there allows us to wallow just a few minutes in a full-fledged tradition, to get in direct contact with the secrets of a genuine legend called Cohiba, the most valuable benchmark in the realm of world-class premium cigars. This is a one-and-only opportunity for a number of reasons: this place is home to the great cigar-rolling masters, heirs and bearers of a centuries-old tradition. This is the factory that churns out the flagship brand of Cuba’s tobacco industry, a brand that appears to bask in the limelight of perfection, a myth that comes alive all over again, this time around with the Cohiba Pirámide Extra, the first figurado in the Cohiba family’s Linea Clasica.

That’s why this could be best place for the 14th Festival delegates to take a closer look at how a Habano is rolled into a legit work of art, a gem that before seeing the light of day sailed a years-long journey from the plantation to the halls, the heart of the factory where cigar rollers shape the delicate leaves into those amazing gems. What’s more, El Laguito captivates visitors for being an expression of ancestral and faraway character of an industry that has lived out the passage of time thanks to its commitment to exquisiteness, and for that odd seducing spell it casts on those who walk past its threshold. Only a handful of visitors manage to paint a clear picture at first sight of the heart-throbbing hard work inside its halls, of a centuries-old tradition

El Laguito Cigar Factory is located in Havana

Capital of Cuba and the country's administrative, political, cultural and scientific center, it is also the capital of two provinces: City of Havana and Havana. Though only around 280 square miles (727 square kilometers) in size-0.65 percent of the archipelago's total area.

The Old Havana and system of forts led UNESCO to declare it a part of world heritage in 1982. Founded on its present site in 1519, the settlement of San Cristobal de La Habana prospered mainly due to its bay, which was a natural port of call for ships sailing to and from the New World. Starting in 1634, because of its strategic location, San Cristobal de La Habana was considered the key to the New World-as attested to by royal letters patent-and the main defense of the West Indies.

The Cuban capital consists of an immense number of buildings in a wide range of architectural styles, built in the course of nearly five centuries. These styles range from the pre-baroque to the baroque, neo-Gothic, neoclassical, eclectic, art noveau and art-deco, to the modern.

Alejo Carpentier, one of Cuba's most famous authors, called it "the city of columns" and focused attention on its streets, which he considered a perennially rich show of life, humanity and contrasts that was bound to entertain any observer.

Over 14 kilometers of excellent beaches lie to the east of the Cuban capital. To the south, a green belt contributes to a healthful atmosphere.

Review about Cigar Factory Tours: El Laguito Cigar Factory
Excellent Ivan

Fábrica El Laguito
Fábrica El Laguito (Av. 146 #2302, e/ 21 y 21A, Cubanacán, tel. 07/208-2486) makes Cohibas. Since Cohibas are made from only the finest leaves, El Laguito is given first choice from the harvest. El Laguito also makes the best cigar in the world—the Trinidad, a 7.5-inch-long cigar made exclusively for Castro to present to diplomats and dignitaries. Requests to visit should be made through Tabacuba (Virtudes #609, e/ Escobar y Gervasio, Centro Habana, tel. 07/877-6861), which is in charge of the industry.

El Laguito Tours - Not Available
We just arrived back from Cuba yesterday (Feb 11, 2016), we went to El Laguito, and unless you know a government official or you have a tour (specified for El Laguito) you won't be getting in. We had a tour guide and a driver....still no getting in.

Cigar Factory
This is one of the main cigar factories in Havana proper and we took advantage of it. They have tours daily that leave every 20-30 minutes or so, depending on the language of the tour you want (english, spanish, french, german, italian etc.). The price is 10CUC which is a little steep but its a good way to see how the factories actually work, and is about 45 minutes in length. You are technically not allowed to take photos in the factory and will be asked to leave your bags, cameras etc. in the bag check before going on the tour. There is a bar and cigar shop on the first floor of the factory. You will learn how cigars are made and its also educational in the sense that you learn how to tell a real, genuine cigar (which may be good if you plan on buying black market). You will likely have "pssssts" coming your way from the various factory workers you may wish to sell you cigars at discounted rates. They are entitled to 3 free cigars each day and many supplement their income by selling real, high-quality cigars to tourists at prices much lower than those in the official shops. Buyer beware! (you could get into trouble at immigration but you are also getting a deal and helping out a Cuban big time). Los Cohiba esplendidos are the "best" and were formerly only available to Fidel Castro.
