    Varadero Airport

Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport was built in 1989 and inaugurated by Fidel Castro,[3] thus replacing the old Varadero airport located in Santa Marta, currently known as Kawama Airport. The airport was named after a journalist, fighter for the Cuban Independence and black rights activist in Cuba Juan Gualberto Gómez (1854–1933). The terminal building has shops for tourists (including rum, cigars, T-shirts, books, carvings, pharmaceuticals), a large departures lounge cafeterias and a VIP lounge. A VIP card is available by paying $30/person to the local tour company representative. This allows the departing passenger to bypass the queues for check-in, have an agent take your departure tax to the correct official for you, and bypass any lines for passport control. The passenger is then taken to the VIP lounge which provides free food and drink (including alcoholic beverages).[4] The ground handling equipment is imported mainly from North America. There are four jet bridges, but air stairs are used for the remaining aircraft parking spaces on the apron by the terminal. Juan Gualberto Gómez Airport (IATA: VRA, ICAO: MUVR), formerly known as Varadero Airport (Spanish: Aeropuerto de Varadero), is an international airport serving Varadero, Cuba and the province of Matanzas. The airport is located closer to the city of Matanzas than to Varadero. The closest airport to Varadero is Kawama Airport. In 2009, the airport handled 1.28 million passengers,[2] making it the second busiest airport in Cuba after José Martí International Airport in Havana.

    “Good stay, good location”
We stayed for a night on the way from Santa Clara to Havana. The hotel is in a great location, the beach is clean and good to swim in. The hotel has good facilities, the buffet is plentiful and lots of bar options. The room was huge, with a lovely view (garden view room) Only a couple of issues, but they were a bit off putting. Firstly the smell of eggs/sewage outside our room which I would assume is due to the pipes being near the surface. The other was that we did have some attitude from a couple of the staff which put us on edge. One being when we were having a stroll around the garden games area where we were blocked from walking and asked which room we were in. Secondly, our door lock stopped working in the morning, which was resolved and I reminded the reception a couple of times we had an extended check out whilst this was being sorted (which I was up at 7.30am to request) Then after a swim, just at the point we needed to get changed, the door was blocked, presumably as the extension wasn't recorded despite the multiple requests. Bit awkward standing in reception in swimming costumes trying again to get back into the room! Just made us a bit uncomfortable so we wouldnt particularly aim to return. One thing I would say - the road between the resort and the local airport is the smoothest you'll ever see in Cuba - enjoy it!

    “Average hotel”
My friend and I stayed at this hotel the first week in October. We had a good holiday but wouldn't return. The staff are very nice and friendly and they make the hotel what it is. The hotel is very dated, the pool has sharp broken and missing tiles and wasn't clean. There is a foul smell like rotten eggs all round the hotel which was down to the dirty green slimy water in the channels that run all round the pool and garden areas, all of which my friend took photos of as we were going to complain to the travel agent on our return but didn't bother as we did have a good holiday. The food was okay but nothing special. In our opinion it was a basic 3 star resort and wasn't worth the money we paid.

“The longer I stayed the less I liked it ”
so lets get things into some proportion. Just because you have an enjoyable holiday does not mean a hotel deserves 5stars. This is a common pitfall with TA reviews which are all too frequently written with a rose-tinted laptop/iPad. Firstly we had a good time at this hotel. However I suspect that was largely because it was fairly empty while we were there. That was until the last 2 days when it became busy and the limitations of the resort became all too apparent. So here's the good and bad GOOD 1) the diving. You get a free dive each day and a second one is only 20CUCs which is phenomenal value. Eugene who runs it was excellent. 2) the staff. Almost all of whom were exceptionally friendly and helpful 3) the beach us beautiful and the beach bar a really nice spot. BEWARE THE MOSQUITOS though!! 4) the entertainment - the stuff in the evening is great with lots of live music. They really make an effort. The stuff in the day was teetering on the edge of (or maybe it had already fallen over a cliff) being an 18-30 holiday though 5) maid service very good 6) main bar very good until last two days when they were overwhelmed with the numbers of guests and started to run out of things. Can you believe it they ran out of STRAWS in a cocktail bar and none could be found. Try drinking a Daquiri without one! BAD 1) having travelled the world for 30 years and eaten on street corners in all corners of the globe I have never had anything that would rival the gastroenteritis that struck me down after my visit to Le Caribe restaurant. Fortunately as a medic I was able to treat myself but it did make me look at food hygiene in the resort with a more questioning eye. In short there are some serious concerns with food regularly being brought out time and again and chicken and seafood being served up undercooked (the hot plates they rely on simply do not cook food through) 2) the buffet - was great when the place was empty but very repetitive. So called theme nights were simply the same food with a few themed decorations. Once the resort filled up it became difficult to find a table and many foods would run out and not be replaced so I would not go for dinner after 8. 3) the WINE. This will shock those who know me but they served up a red wine that is simply undrinkable. No matter how I tried I just count do it. I've always prided myself that I could pass any bushtucker trial on IACGMOOH but if they served that wine to me I would be in serious trouble 4) the pool is not big enough once the resort is full and there are not enough sunbeds. And we all know what that means. YES, I'm afraid to say that everyone (all nations equally guilty) starts reserving sunbeds with towels. On the day we left we witnessed many couples touring the resort looking for beds. I considered auctioning my bed off at one point as there was clearly a high demand 5) Rooms are quite nice but quality of towels very poor and loo roll is very thin which is tricky after you've eaten at Le Caribe!!! Shower great though 6) no Do not disturb sign in room. Why??? Actually it's because they blow away and/or other guests pinch them from your door. 7) Butler service - they were very friendly. Only problem was that when we asked them to do stuff. Eg Can we have a D not disturb sign please, it didn't happen or took far too long. Maybe it is me that did not understand I'm supposed to tip people before they have done anything (see earlier review) 8) Reception. 8 people get off bus on arrival. Four get welcome drink. Four dont. .???? Reception were actually v friendly until it got busy when they were simply overwhelmed. Only one person on desk to check out guests which led to very significant delays. This was particularly irritating as we had been locked out of our room half an hour before checkout time as they cancelled our keys early (obviously hadn't remembered the clocks went back) and didn't seem able to resolve the issue. So overall, this could and should be a really great hotel deserving of a much better review but at present it is not. I hope the new management will look at some of these issues because I think that one might see many very disenchanted clientele if it remains busy and something doesn't change

    “Great Adventure in Cuba”
Just returned today from a Week at the Royal Hicacos. Enjoyed our stay here but there were a few high points and a few low points. High points.... most of the staff are amazing people and make this resort what it is. From Hermes and Barbra in the Buffet to Yuniere and Julio at the main bar... Lyan our butler was great! On and on. Our daily interaction with the staff was top rated. The beach here is great and as we love to take long walks on the beach this was a highlight of this area and this resort. Also loved the water ballet. Off resort Trip to Havana was a highlight of our trip. Can't say enough about Gloria from cubaoutings.com. Highly recommended! Room for improvement....the first thing that stood out was that the first 4 times I went to any of the public washroom areas there was no paper towels in them and there were not clean. This is such a small thing but was a consistent problem throughout our stay. Clean your bathrooms. I understand they are putting in a nightclub but while we were there the evening seemed to lack stuff to do....no dancing...etc. They could have cleared a spot outside and had dancing in the evening. Evening entertainment was marginal. Was expecting theme nights like Cuba night with dancing, entertainment, outdoor show, BBQ, etc? Communication could be better with promoting events etc. Only way we knew what was going on was a typed sheet of paper on the wall under the Buffet area. Several resorts I've been to have daily sheets delivered to rooms so you could wake up in the am and make a plan for the day. Before we left I emailed them twice asking for information about spa services, room upgrades, and room requests and did not receive a response. Beds and bed sheets are not what you would expect from a 5 star resort. Towels are old and hard. Drinks are on the beach are in very small plastic cups...about 2 gulps with ice cubes. Don't want to be negative as this place has much potential and we must factor in the challenges faced in this environment and again we had a great time. Short version of review.....3.5+ star facilityl with a lot of 5 star staff.

“Nice Hotel, Sunny but Cold Weather ”
We flew from Bogota, for people flying from Colombia be aware you must pay 18 USD Before boarding plane (ONLY cash) no ATM inside Airport after emigration???. At Avianca?s check in they will NOT tell you this. Nice welcome in Hotel (Champagne), they had problems receiving payments that night at Hotel , so we had to pay next day, they gave us room 1602, really close to everything but because it was first floor, there was too much noise in the morning, try to get second floor same wing, less people and staff walking. Next day went ahead and made reservations for a la carte Restaurants, booked Las Morlas and Caribe, first one was Cuban cuisine, was good and second one seafood, lobster really good. Lunch Restaurant was good too, seafood (shrimp, fish etc.) Italian food, Steaks etc. House Red Wine wasn?t good, breakfast was good too, between breakfast and lunch there?s not too much to eat sot try to be on time for breakfast. This is the same for Lunch-Dinner. There?s no ocean view because of trees in front of beach, room had plenty of space, fridge with beer , water and soda, TV, hot tub etc. My only complaint was noise as said before. Hotel is in good shape, swimming pool area too. Swimming pool is not heated so it was really cold. Our weekend was very sunny but cold wind because of a cold front coming from the north. We also couldn?t dive because it was so windy too. For divers, diving is included for free every day. Drinks are good not watered down, Cuban beer was tasty too. Mojitos were the best. Staff was friendly too. Be aware to bring cash with you, there are only 2 ATM in Varadero. Going back you have to pay at the airport 50 CUC (cash only).

“Awesome Return To Royal Hicacos ”
My husband and I just enjoyed another awesome stay at the Royal Hicacos Resort in early November. All the staff we encountered in our 1 week stay were just simply the best. We were able to check into the one of the blocks that we were hoping to stay in which was the 26th Block, nice and quiet and very clean. The bartending staff at the lobby bar provided a great atmosphere to be around. We took advantage of the 1 day trip to Havana this visit and had a blast, what a great education. The beach and pool were fantastic and never were you not able to find chairs to enjoy the day. Just a heads up for anyone returning to the resort, they no longer have a room that you can use a computer, they do provide wifi for a cost per hour but you are out of luck if you do not travel with a computer, tablet or phone with data. Our only sour taste is that one of our memory cards for our camera went missing that had the majority of our pictures on it from our weeks stay. I am still waiting for a response from the resort via email but have yet to hear back if even my email is getting through.

“very relaxing holiday despite small issues ”
We travelled as a couple end of October for 10 days. We expected rain and got it for all of one hour- fantastic. The weather was perfect, hot but breezy by the beach and low humidity. Initial impressions of the hotel were disappointing comparing it to a 4 star we stayed in in Guardalavaca a few years ago but it grew on us. We were expecting a total refurbishment and for it to be completed but discovered that only selected areas had been done, not including the room we stayed in, and work was ongoing. The Piano bar was out of action, which was a disappointment but the entertainment early in the lobby bar was very good. We arrived in the early hours so did not meet our butler who did not make contact with us for the next 2 days- we had to chase him to make restaurant reservations and to replace items that were missing from our room (iron and coffee maker). I agree with some of the negative comments as the bedrooms, though big, are dated, and the soft furnishings washed out, definitely not 5 star. The food selection was good. Unlike some reviewers I thought the al a carte restaurants were generally better than the buffet. The meal at the grill at the beach was superb. The service in all the restaurants was very good. The 24 hour bistro seemed to run out of wine early in the evening and some food was not available at breakfast, and often the Creperie there was not operating, but otherwise it was a quiet place to go to avoid the hustle and bustle of the buffet, especially at breakfast and lunch. The drinks service was excellent, Carlos in the lobby bar .especially. The beach is lovely and beds are easily found. Special thanks to the guy who dragged sun beds up to the pool area from the beach when we arrived there late one afternoon, and wouldn't accept a tip! People do reserve beds, especially the covered double beds around the pool, and rarely use them, which was annoying. It is a ten minute walk to the dolphin show (delfinarium) which is superb. There is an option to swim or for the wary, to get your photo taken close up The open top bus which you can pick up 5 minutes away from the hotel is only 5 cucs for a day ticket and we stayed on for the circular trip to see the whole peninsula. Varadero town is a great place to buy cheap souvenirs. Get off at the public park which is beautiful to stroll around and has a lovely bar which only charges 2 cuc for a beer and 3 for an amazing pina colada (better than the hotel cocktails which are all based on rum which can taste rough). Having said that the cocktails are freely available at the resort and there is really no need to bring those silly vacuum flasks the Canadians favour as there is even service round the poll and at the beach!!. overall highly recommended

    “"Enjoyable" ”
Let me start with some facts about us, we are a middle aged gay couple, we have been to Cuba & other Caribbean Islands in the past. First off in my humble opinion Cuba does not currently have true 5 Star resorts, there are some which are very close. This is based on Cuba's ability to trade & imports. However, Cuba has its people & they are its best asset, Cuba also has beautiful beaches & a colourful history. In other words, if you require a culinary experience to complete your vacation, you may be a bit disappointed. We visited the Royal Hicacos from Oct 19 to Nov 2 (2 wks). We did not purchase the Concierge Option and as there was no Ocean View Rooms at this resort we opted for a Garden View. Our arrival was very pleasant with a cold towel, a glass of champagne & smiles all around. After all other arriving guests were ushered off with their respective butlers, you heard me, BUTLERS! we finally were introduced to our butler Yadiel, a very professional young man with a wonderful demeanor. Yadiel proceeded to take us on a walking tour of the general area of the resort, a very nice touch. Then we were taken to our room, which I am sorry to say should not have been used for guest, (that is as much as I would state) we stated our feeling to Yadiel and within a couple hours we were ushered to two other room options. We thank Yadiel for his understanding and for him not making us feel uncomfortable about the situation. Unfortunately, we lost Yadiel as our butler in the switch. We did acquire a beautiful young lady as our butler for the rest of our stay. However, we were so impressed that ever time we encountered Yadiel during our stay, he would inquire if all was well with us. It is staff like this that leave a lasting impression with guests. The Lobby: was very well done in white, beautiful & open with white sheers blowing in the breeze, very well coming. Our Final Room: was very nice, good air, split level, nice bathroom w deep soaker tub, and a bed which had to be climbed into, a higher bed I have not seen. The mattress was comfortable, but we wished the bedding would have fit the mattress, so we were not losing our bedding during the night. The Décor was a bit dated but we did have a good sized veranda for sitting out to relax. The Grounds: are bit confusing to navigate at first, but once you do you can enjoy the time & effort which must go into maintenance. And again always a Hola! from the gardeners as you walk around. The Beach: ..... this is spectacular, this resort has one of the best, if not the best beach we have seen in Cuba, WOW! it is incredibly wide and the water is turquoise and calm most days. Simply beautiful! Some work is required on the Palapas (beach umbrellas) as most have seen hard times, but there is work being done on these as we speak. By the way ... there are Beach Waiters who does the walking for your drinks, with always a smile. Restaurants: this is where Cuba loses points, the A La Carte Restaurants were good, not very good or memorable. The Grill was the best in our opinion, it is @ the Beach Restaurant, wonderful ambience but the mosquitoes were a big annoyance. The Buffet was again good at Breakfast & Lunch, hit & miss for Dinner. The Italian, Seafood & Grill stations @ the Buffet certainly helped give options. Also, there was a very talented violinist & musicians who were wonderful. The 24hr Bistro was also very nice & handy for between meal snacks. The 24hr Lobby Bar is the central meeting spot, a beautifully appointed floating space, well decorated and extremely inviting. We enjoyed this space very much. Drinks were very good through out the resort, except for a couple occasions when certain options were not available. Pools: there is a scenic interconnection of pools, one with a pool bar. We enjoyed the pools on the red flag day @ the beach. Entertainment: This was a wonderful surprise, we did not take part in much of the daytime activities, however the nightly entertainment was terrific, very good, the Michael Jackson & Aqua Ballet shows just to name a couple. the first week we had torrential rain almost every evening so we did not see too many shows but enjoyed it all in the second week. Side Trips: we did the one day trip to Havana, what an experience, so beautiful yet so sad. (this is meant in the kindest of ways) We hope to spend a couple days in Havana if & when we return. Overall: the staff at this resort are just wonderful, at Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner, they certainly made our vacation a truly enjoyable experience, smiles shared all day, every day, singing to me & having the violinist play @ our dinner table for my Birthday will always be remembered. We hope to be back soon, we do not need a 5 Star to enjoy our vacation. Before I forget ... please fix the night lights on the pathways around the grounds before we return Look forward to seeing the renovated disco. Thank you guys for everything. J&G

“A tale of two Cubas.... ”
There are two Cubas. One where sun-tanned tourists lounge in luxury all day and all night, with attentive, smiling staff hovering at all times to cater to their every whim. Where food and libations are available 24/7 at the tilt of a head, where your personal butler or tour rep can arrange excursions to suit any budget... as long as its a generous budget! Royal Hicacos Varadero excels at providing a utopian bubble where you can live like kings and queens... as long as you do what you're told and stay within the bubble! Do not try to stray of the reservation and mingle with the real natives! The other Cuba lies far distant, in cities like Habana, where old 50's cars litter the roads for want of embargoed parts.... where rationing restricts locals from purchasing food & consumer goods you & I take for granted.... and the infrastructure crumbles around a populace eager to join the rest of the world. Royal Hicacos cannot be beat for the isolated beach resort experience. Yes there is the underlying whiff of decaying vegetation, especially during the rainy season, taxis conveniently outside the front of the resort just waiting to rip you off, a tantalising scooter rental operation that never wants to actually rent anyone a scooter (in cahoots with aforementioned taxis?) and a dive operation that has a free first dive for qualified guests.... if the stars align and there are no clouds on the horizon. All things that can be improved. Pack your suntan lotion, a good book, a well-stocked wallet and a good dose of patience... and enjoy Royal Hicacos! Then get out and see the real Cuba.

    “Fantastic Holiday ”
My wife and I spent the week of August 16-23 and had the most enjoyable, relaxing holiday we have ever had. From the first moment we walked off the plane we felt like guests in their home and not just tourists. Our butlers at the hotel, Fide and Big Alex took care of every request we had. Our baggage handler Raul, bartender at the beach Kirenia, poolside waiter Luis, and beach server Daniel are just super people and bend over backwards for you. Again I can't emphasize enough how you feel like guests and not tourists. The hotel is very clean and the rooms are quite big. The pools are very well maintained and lots of seating. The beach is spectacular. All the people that work there are the friendliest people that we have ever met and most speak incredible English. And now the food. Very good. There is no way you will go hungry. Buffet has a great selection and the a la carte restaurants are fantastic. The night time shows are quite good but definitely plan on seeing the Michael Jackson show as well as the Rock and Roll show. It was our first time to Cuba, and we are now going to go back the this resort in April. Quit worrying about Cuba, and just get there. SPECTACULAR.

    “Beautiful place ”
We moved here after 23 hours at the horrible Breezes Bella Costa This place is great. Beautful rooms, lovely private large balcony. Food is great, buffet is enough, the a la cartes are an added extra. The buffet has freshly made for you crepes, pancakes, eggs, waffles etc, loads of fresh fruit, fish etc. They will make a pasta dish for you whilst you wait. Great pool, lovely beach. We would return without a doubt.

“The most relaxing and enjoyable holiday ever ”
My Wife and I have just returned after ten of the most relaxing and enjoyable days we have ever experienced on our travels around the world, and well worth the 24hours traveling to get there we have stayed in some wonderful resorts and locations but we have never experienced the warmth and friendliness of the staff across the board as we have at the Royal Hicacos Resort There are not just one or two staff that made this holiday special every member of staff treated us as though we were long lost friends The hotel is beautifully presented the grounds are beautifully laid out and the gardeners work tirelessly to keep them pristine The food in all the restaurant's from the buffet to the four A la carte restaurant's is of a good standard and the presentation is very good. The welcome you get every day is exceptional and no question goes unanswered if anyone needs assistance it is always available We made friends with a couple and the lady used a wheelchair, the lift broke down which prevented us using the fish restaurant and the management made alternate reservations in the Italian restaurant on the ground floor and also arranged for the dishes required from the fish restaurant to be served to us. The Entertainment staff are great they are very focused on making your stay fun from playing volleyball & salsa dancing on the beach to music and dancing in the lobby bar some of the shows that they put on are very professional to summarize great hotel, great food, great beach and most of all wonderful staff

“Excellent Food and Excellent Service ”
Just returned to Canada last night, my boyfriend and I spent a week at this amazing resort for our 10yr anniversary. Staff are amazing and food is delicious. This resort really put effort into making everything at its best. They probably hire good chefs because all the a la carte has amazing and delicious good. Entertainment were great, room is clean. The butler service is great (Lean, Fernado and Roberto) know who you are and always check if everything was going well. They do what they said they will do, they take note I their note book for everything you had request or any questions that they didn't have the answer. They made sure they check with their manager and came back to you with an answer right away. The 24 hr snack bar is awesome. Carlos at the lobby bar is amazing, he brings you drink quick and remembers exactly what you like. The evening shows are amazing and the entertainment teams always try to entertain you through out the day where you can participate and earn some resort money where you can redeem prizes. Even if you loose, they still reward you with some resort money. Drinks are not water down and they are very generous with the alcohol. Food is tasty and my boyfriend is a very picky eater and he loves the food. No concern there what so ever. We also went to other resorts and by far Royal Hicacos is the prettiest and cleanniest. Stop reading, just book it!!!!!

    “We are coming back ”
Enjoyed this facility in March of 2014 for two weeks. I cannot say enough good things about this resort. Food is varied and very good. We dined in the buffet most times although we tried a couple of the a la cart restaurants. Amazing, genuinely friendly staff. Clean rooms, grounds, pool, beach. walkways, bars, everywhere. VERY safe country. I would let my daughter go there by herself if she wanted to. I have heard that all the renovations should be done by December of 2015. We are returning in march again for two more weeks. Hope to enjoy the free S.C.U.B.A. diving this time. I almost cant wait until march in 2015. If the Australian manager reads this, kudos to you and your staff. Fabulous job. Please keep doing what you are doing.

    “another wonderful stay”
Me and my husband just returned from another wonderful stay at our "cottage" as my co-workers call it. We have been coming to the same resort twice a year since 2008. The resort while undergoing changes with new management is still as wonderful as ever. Thanks to all the wonderful staff that always make sure you are well taken care of. Carlos at the reception, Middrey and Elenia at the lobby bar, Hermes and Barbara at the buffet, the wonderful ladies at the spa that gave us amazing massages every day. All the other staff that unfortunately I cannot recall by name (I am horrible in remembering names) While I mentioned some names, everyone that works at this resort is amazing. I do not take advantage of the butler service, so I cannot speak on it, however I am sure that everyone who works there is as amazing. We will be back again in April and I am looking forward to seeing everyone again. This resort is very good value for money.Having said all this there is one point of contention that I would like to mention. As I said before we have been coming here for quite some time and we are used to certain kind of services that seem to have been changed. our very first time we were taken to the resort by bus that only serviced this resort. On our subsequent visits we were upgraded to concierge service and were taken by mini bus, then we upgraded to the royal suites and were taken by taxi. We were shocked to arrive this time only being met by the Sunwing rep and no one from the resort. We were quickly ushered to a bus where we waited for almost an hour for some guest going to another resort, who turned out to be on the bus the whole time. This was fine, however not what we are used to. The more annoying part was when we were leaving, again we are used to being picked up by a taxi as part of our upgrade for which I pay quite a lot of money, however there we stood for a 5:00 p.m. bus pick up which arrived at 5:35. I was told that the service is different as Sunwing now provides transportation from the airport not the resort. I hope that this issue can be resolved for the the next time we come. Again I would like to thank everyone for making yet another stay at the resort a wonderful experience. See you soon.

    “Excellent Feb vacation ”
This was my first trip to Cuba and had done a lot of research on trip advisor prior to booking, there is nothing negative I can say about this resort . The staff from the dining staff, chefs, room staff, reception, gardeners were kind, lovely and accommodating to us. Very, very friendly. The food was very good as long as you know you are not going to experience the same textures and taste as Canadian food , you have to be a little open minded. We took advantage of the culture and went on the jeep safari which was a huge eye opening experience if you want to see the living and countryside of Cuba. I recommend taking things for children or families along the route, we did this on a Saturday when the children were not in school and there were several of them coming from their homes on the route to greet us. Little did I know we were going to experience this and I truly wish I had been prepared to offer gifts to these little ones. The beach was incredible. The drinks were fabulous. Our room was great. Very relaxing. Entertainment was very enjoyable. It rained 1 day which we took advantage of trying every drink on the bar menu to pass away a rainy day. The grounds are meticulous. I felt very safe going into Varadero on the local buses, quite an experience. The vendors were not pushy, but seemed to be a little more so on a Havana Tour which I did like but probably would not do again, it was a very long day. Again, we had a fabulous time here, we will most definitely be back and would be back next Feb if they would allow teens, but we promised our boys a family trip, maybe the year after!! Thank you for a wonderful vacation!!!

“Wish we were still there ”
We travelled in October for 12 nights. 25 hours after leaving home in Southern Ireland we were greeted by smiles, damp towels and bubbly. Tiredness disappeared and we were on our holidays. Our bags were whisked to our rooms and we were given a short but ample tour of the facilities. Our room was perfect with a lovely garden view. STAFF: I am reluctant to mention any one member as from the time we arrived and were met at reception to when we left we were looked after by all, reception staff, our bag delivery and pick up gentlemen, bar staff, waiting staff, the chef's, cleaning staff ( the dancing cleaning lady in the lobby bar was amazing) entertainment manager take note. She is a natural. We sat at different areas in the restaurant and all those who served us always had a smile. I will mention Iliana, our cleaning lady, thank you for looking after us so well. The gentlemen attending the gardens, always a smile and "ola" We were never, at any stage put under pressure to give tips, but it is a nice way of showing appreciation for excellent service. BEACH: Amazing. Clean pure white sand, Warm water, heaven. We spent most days on the beach. Beach restaurant, bar and the workers who keep you topped up with whatever your drink of choice is. No complaints from us. ENTERTAINMENT: We made it our business to find a seat outside the piano bar and had a brilliant view of the nightly entertainment. We really enjoyed all of it. The music in the restaurant and the lobby bar was really good. We visited the piano bar most nights and again courteous smiling staff and nice relaxing music. We didn't take part in the beach or pool side entertainment but those who did appeared to be having a ball. FOOD: Huge variety of food in buffet restaurant. Amazing selection of fish. pasta, meats, salads, vegetables, breads, pancakes, omelettes and eggs to order. You would want to be very picky not to find something to eat. We went to three of the themed restaurants and again the food was lovely. If I was to be picky I would have liked the food in the buffet restaurant to be a bit hotter. DRINK: Plenty of variety, spirits, cocktails, liquors, the only damper here was the wine. It wasn't great. It probably wouldn't bother most people but it's my favourite tipple. " Ah well" I managed and tasted a variety of cocktails yummy. The only down side to our holiday was the long trip to and from Havana Airport. We will definitely be back but will fly into Varadero. Trips: We went to Havana for an overnight stay. Amazing city. Tip. organise a tour guide or go on a guided tour. We're looking forward to returning next year.

    “must go ”
I've read all the bad reviews out there and after reading it..just goes to show that people like to complain about everything and anything even when they are in paradise. Don't listen to the bad review's because people will always have something bad to say I must say that I've been to many countries in the Caribbean but the workers here at Royal Hicacos went above and beyond to make you feel welcomed and were extremely friendly. I would like to give a special thanks to a few people that made my trip. Our butlers Yaniel and Betty who always had a smile on their faces. The bartenders (especially Kirena on the beach) were amazing to talk to and always made sure you were taken care of. The staff at the buffet (Rafael and Chichu) who always had a smile on their face and were very welcoming. I know I singled out a few staff members but I just want to make sure you know that everyone at that resort was extremely friendly and went above and beyond for you. As for the food, how can you complain about lobster tail and red and white tuna on a daily basis at the buffet. Yes the food is not loaded with sauce on it but hey it was delicious! I would definitely return for another visit!!!

We went on a family trip and we had an amazing time. The hotel was great, the facilities were really nice, the room was spacious and clean. We stayed on a top floor so we had to walk a lot, I guess to burn all those cocktails hehe The staff was so helpful, specially one of the managers Ignacio, he was so attentive, he was great with us. Also Marian the Head butler solved a mishap that we had, so we could not be more thankful for that. The restaurants were all great, the food was really good, even my husband loved it and he is a picky eater. The activities were really fun, even though we missed the ones at night, since we were having dinner at that time. We could not have had a better time in Varadero.

For a quiet, comfortable, friendly, relaxing, personable, beautiful destination, this is the place to be. Our second time to this resort provided all of this and more. The service & staff are exceptional. Food selection & quality would be hard to match anywhere. Even after every meal for 6 days at the buffet, there was no need to visit an ala carte. The beach is .... WOW !!! Definitely one of the best along about 4 miles of beach one can walk on. We needed a break to relax & get refreshed..... mission accomplished.

Myself and my girlfriend stayed here for 7 days and it was absolutely amazing. Service is incredible, everything is maintained beautifully and the beach is fantastic. Special mention goes to our butlers Fernando and Alberto who were always ready to help out and organize meals, activities or just a general chat. If you're by the pool, my man Nolson will be wondering around ready to take your drink order with a smile. Great service. If you're looking at going to Cuba this place has everything you need, great drinks, good food and the entertainment is wonderful.

This is such a beautiful hotel. We loved every minute. The food is great, rooms are comfortable but it would have to be the staff that made the stay memorable. The service is great, everyone smiles and is warm. They remembered us everyday, knowing what we liked to eat / drink and the way we liked it. Look out for Nolson, he is the waiter by the pool. He was one of our favourites, always happy and accommodating, with such a fun personality. Fernando and Alberto were our our butler's and we will always remember how lovely and helpful they both were. The staff are hard working, lovely people - so don't forget to tip!!! Hello ! we are just back from the great Resort Royal Hicacos in Varadero ! Ok this was the first time in Cuba and we fell in love with the people and the country ! The Royal Hicacos was everything we expected from a 5 stars in Varadero and we where pampered like a queen and a king ! We had the chance to have Lyan as a Majordome and he did a fantastic job ! Yinette at the front lobby is so nice and Ignacio too . At the buffet there is so many great people there but we where mostly whit Mabel who is a sweetheart ! We went to Havana with an excursion and Felipe did speak french so it was easier for us . Just a couple of remarks on that excursion .. We would have prefer to stay in the old part of Havana . Its architecture and the view was much more beautiful than the modern part . And we would have loved to eat outside on a terrasse .. You can do your own private excursion there ask the people on the resort .. or your majordome if i knew it before we would have go there on a private tour . Go to Varadero to shop or just walk around .. we did take the Coco taxi it was fun and unsusual ! you have to deal the price before ! One thing we did appreciate there was no vendors on the beach .. at all ! so no one to disturb you when you want to relax . Go at the beach bar and say hi to the sweet lady there and have a drink , she sings and she is so nice ! The beach is beautiful and the sea very calm with a few times with waves but nothing dangerous . We did a few trips in the south and we would go back there anytime . For Canadians you have to change your money there .. when we went it cost us 1.18 $ for a convertible peso . Go and have fun ... and if the bed is to hard for you ask the maids to put you a cushion ! .. Just a small thing to improove .. the Bistro needs to improve its service and food choices . I would like to thank all the employees there and Dalhia our maid , Lyan our majordome , Yinette and Ignacio at the lobby , and Mabel and her team at the buffet , you did made our trip so beautiful !

“Loved this place! Best staff! ”
My family and I had stayed here in October 2014. It was an awesome time. I had been to Cuba once before at a different resort, but will definitely come back and stay only at Royal Hicacos. Alex had greeted us and the whole time was super friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. Veronica, the entertainment staff was always outgoing and laughing, trying to get everyone involved. We joined in everyday and had a blast. Raul Javier was there to greet us everytime we came or went from the resort. He was truly a good hearted person and knows what he is doing! He was so friendly. Raul and his team in the buffet was awesome. On our last day, they had prepared a table for all six of us, with a flower decoration in the middle. They were awesome to have around and help us during every meal of the day. Im a vegan and I always found food to eat (which I was worried about), so if you have vegetarian restrictions, despite what is written about Cuba and the food, this place has lots of options! Our favorites were the wait staff by the pool. Yane and Angie were amazing. Loved chatting with them everyday. Always remembered our drinks and our names. And our most favorite was Nolsen! He is such a friendly good person. I really hope to see each and everyone one of these when we come visit again! This resort was amazing. Great food, great services and amazing staff! And the beaches are amazing as well! Thanks everyone at Royal Hicacos for an amazing time! Shyla

    “Best Vacation Ever! ”
We spent oct 15 to oct 22 at the Royal Hicacos and it was a week I will never forget! Best vacation ever, a big "Gracias" to Marion and our butlers Guille and Felix. Always looking out for all your needs and quickly resolving any issues. Thank you to Arlin for preparing our ceremony for our vow renewal, it was just simply beautiful! We arrived mid afternoon were greeted with a cool towel and glass of champagne, I would like to say hola to our friends Marcelo, Jamie and Rienal and the others in reception. Raul Javier from the lobby was so humble, they are all beautiful people. The lobby bar JB, Roberto, Sandra and our beloved Middrey. We enjoyed our conversations and hearing about their families! Miss you all! Swim up bar well it goes without saying Noslen, Ange and Yani always smiling and entertaining the guests. Everyone couldn't do enough for you. Ana the cleaning lady is a gem always happy! Our maid was a gentle soul and couldn't do enough for you. I could go on and on, we will be back hopefully in march to see all our wonderful friends. Juanki , Yvette and Luis great job at the disco and the mobile liquor carts. Lots of fancy drinks and my favourite San Francisco (non alcoholic). There are some renovations going on however not once did it interfere with our stay. This was our 5th visit and we will be going back. I would suggest to all to go to the Facebook page which is kept updated so you can read more reviews and updates. Evening shows were good, food was great! See you all soon!

    “Customer ServiceExcellent ”
My wife and two daughters stayed at this resort from17th/27th October 2014. The resort is in the process of a refurbishment but any disruption during our stay was kept to a minimum, the customer service was excellent and several people deserve a mention for helping to make our stay an above average one. Noslen at the pool bar was a credit to the resort , supported by the always smiling Yane. Our butlers Pedro and Myan could not do enough for us,their boss head butler Mary Anne was efficient and all helped deliver a first class service. All bar tenders in the lobby bar were great a special mention goes to Fernando. The resort itself was excellent, beach and beach grill a great way to spend a day relaxing, the pool for those who prefer that location was a place where there was always something going on. Our only complaint was the Canadian visitors who content themselves getting tanked up in the lobby bar and then verbally abuse anyone who gets in their way, that apart we still had a marvellous time at the Royal Hicacos and would certainly return.

My husband and I visited Royal Hicacos Oct 30th- Nov 6 2014. What an amazing experience. From the wonderful welcoming with champagne and lovely staff a seamless check in and fabulous butler. It was an excellent way to begin our vacation. The hotel is well maintained only complaint would be that the hot tubs were not in working condition and the pools were pretty cold. The weather was still unpredictable with some beautiful days but also chilly/ windy days as well. The food was excellent. I was nervous as I have heard mixed reviews with Cuban food. We both loved the buffet. Caribe was my favourite a la carte my husband really liked the grill. Bartenders I could not say enough about!!!! We didn't go to party hard but had such an amazing experience with the bartenders. Noslen and Yadir by far met and exceeded our expectations. Always coming up with fun delicious drinks when I couldn't decide and so friendly. Nos rocked that swim up bar like no other! Interacting and making sure we were all having a blast but always walking around ensuring everyone had excellent service. Yadir was excellent in the Lobby Bar always had a smile on his face and made our time so much fun. I will absolute recommend this resort to anyone visiting Cuba and I can not WAIT to come back.

    “Excellent place to unwind ”
My wife and I have recently returned from our holiday after spending 7 days in Cuba at this hotel in late October. In our opinion this was a very good choice. From the very beginning we found all the staff to be welcoming and friendly and very helpful. It is situated on an excellent part of Varadero beach. The rooms were a good size and the beds very big and comfortable. We would disagree with a reviewer who says this hotel is dated. Yes, it does need a few bits and pieces repaired but there was some work going on which was not disruptive in any way. We will certainly return sometime in the future.

“How do you spell Relax? ”
My wife and I just got back from a 6 day vacation at this wonderful resort. We've been to Cuba many times and decided to try Mexico, DR and Club Meds in the French Antilles. Many of ours friends went to the Royal Hicacos when it was Sandals and said it was wonderful. Well, here we go, the welcome crew took charge right away and since we arrived early ( before checkout time) were advised our room would be ready only around 2pm. Understandable. Cleaning rooms does not happen with the snap of your fingers. They directed us to a courtesy room near the reception where we could change and freshen up before heading over to a fabulous lunch buffet. A "Butler" came to get us and walked us to our room where our luggage would find us at the same time. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, large clean bathroom and a huge balcony. We were on the spectacular beach by 2:30, a drink in our hands starting a beautiful and relaxing vacation. No boom boom music anywhere anytime. No harassing for any activities. Plenty of pleasant waiters circulating making sure your glasses aren't empty. After a few days, we looked at each other and were wondering if we were actually in Cuba. Food was way beyond our expectations. Where can you get Tuna (white or red) on demand? Fish, large shrimp, steaks, chops, turkey , rosbif , pastas, were always available lunch and dinner. Salads, cheeses and desserts made to order. Are we in Cuba? À la carte restaurants, are good, great service, if you prefer being served. Italian is best. Check-out is smooth, late check-out is complimentary (3 hrs). WOW, Are we in Cuba? The cigar bar, main lobby bar, beach bar are hospitable, no waiting, no pushing, no line ups, everyone is served equally with a smile. We are not "show" aficionados. Michael Jackson show is a must see. Always long chairs available on the beach, no need to wake up to reserve. 5 star slam dunk for Cuba. Considering going back in the spring. Cuba?we're back. Thank you Royal Hicacos.

“Not perfect but a very good resort ”
Stayed at the resort from 27 October for 7 nights after 4 nights in Havana and had a very very enjoyable time. The staff throughout the resort were exceptional and really make it special. They were friendly, always smiling and wanting to help and whilst tips were welcomed, I had the feeling that service would be the same if none were given. We were well looked after and impressed by Yoleixi, Yuni and Michel in the buffet, Carlos in the Lobby bar and Nelly in the entertainment team. On arrival we were given a glass of cold bubbly and quickly checked into our room, which was very spacious with a separate lounge area. The interior decoration and lighting could be brighter and furnishings whilst adequate, would benefit from being updated. Same could be said for the air conditioner. Bath tub was huge and easily accommodated 2 people. We tried all the restaurants, where the food was generally good, but no more than that. The a la carte restaurants usually had live music and good service but had a limited selection, with a choice of 2 starters (salads), 2 soups, 3 mains and a chefs special desert. Our view of the restaurants were: 1. Buffet: Grill section for meats, Italian section, Fish section, salad bar with a wide selection. No waiting around for a table and service was friendly and efficient. 2. Fish a la carte restaurant: lobster was good but restaurant lacked any ambiance. No background or live music. 3. Caribbean a la carte restaurant: good food and ambiance in a nice setting but no Caribbean dishes in the menu and thus a bit disappointing. 4. Grill a la carte: on the beach with good food but could get chilly if there was a breeze. A few cats kept roaming in looking for scraps of food. 5. Italian a la carte: our favourite as everything was good and just fitted together. Food, service, ambiance, lighting, live music. The schedule of entertainment during week included daily aerobics, dance classes, quizs, bingo, Spanish lessons, table tennis, volley ball and other exercises. All carried out enthusiastically. The evening entertainment was provided by external troupes, with the Michael Jackson show being particularly good. The night club and piano bar was under renovation resulting in the lobby bar being the focal meeting and drinking spot. The range and standard of cocktails were very good. Those renovations did not detract from our enjoyment and were told that they would be complete by December. The beach was fabulous with fine golden sand and clear blue water and there was plenty of beach umbrellas and bed for all. Same could be said for the sunbeds around the pool, though early users got the cabanas. We spoke to other guests, many of whom return year after year. One had been there 7 times and others that had tried other resorts in Varadero were adamant that this was the best. The Royal Hicacos is not perfect but is very good value and is one of the best all inclusive resort that we have experienced. It will be the one we will return to if we are in Varadero.

    “My Cuba Holiday ”
We visited Varadero on 20th October for 11 nights at the Royal Hicacos Resort. The start of our holiday was a nightmare as we had to wait in Havana airport for 4 hours before going through customs, service there was terrible. But finally we made it to the hotel late at night & I was very pleasantly surprised, glass of ice cold champagne on arrival and a swift check in was a relief, the reception area is gorgeous- airy and open with the sound of running water. Rooms are huge- living area and the biggest (& highest!) bed I've ever been in :) they are really clean and shower is fab. Mini bar fully stocked everyday (being concierge) maids are great & also turn down service with choccys on the pillow. Like on every other review mentioned the staff are their biggest asset, our main butlers Marcos & Leo treat us like royalty! Hermes in the buffet restaurant (serves outside tables) is amazing! Al a carte restaurants were worth a visit but I preferred the buffet, so much choice and the pasta station was my fave. Beach was so beautiful, loads of spare beds and waitress service (a mojito was a constant in my hand) one day we even saw wild dolphins swim past- amazing! We tipped quite a lot all through our stay, I think this is necessary to get served quicker & drinks remembered etc, but the staff are so good you will want too anyway. We did two excursions, jeep safari & a day in Havana which is a must whilst visiting Cuba, the history & culture is brilliant. Watch out for Mosquitos (bring plenty of repellent!) All in all, me & my partner had an amazing holiday, we have great memories and would thoroughly recommended this resort.

We stayed at the Royal Hicacos from 25 Sept until 6 Oct, from the minute we walked into reception, we knew that we'd picked the best hotel. We were given a wet facecloth and a glass of bubbly, and checked in sitting on a armchair! Without doubt, the very best thing about tis hotel is the staff. They cannot do enough for you and nothing is a chore for them. They also seem extremely happy in their work. We especially loved Oznay and Andres in the buffet, and Vincent who made the lovely flowers! The bar staff in the lobby bar were also lovely, especially Carlos. The workers were all so great, with breathtaking beaches, the ridiculously good food. !f you are following a vegan diet like myself. Lots of seeds and nuts ( went to the sundae bar for extra walnuts and almonds), rice, prunes, figs, fruit, veggies, they even had rice cakes, pasta was so yummy etc.. I can't wait to go back, i am looking forward to the night club it was just being renovated, everything else seemed completed, that i could see.

After six trips to Hicacos over ten years not much has changed. The resort has been purchased by sunwing and "Royalton Varadero" will soon be the new name. Fresh paint/day beds/restaurant upgrades are just a few things which are being done. The new "butler service" is nice. This resort has always offered very good value and my wife and I have returned mainly because the amazing staff. Having the GM Felix greet us at supper in El Caribe was special. Somehow he's made the service at Hicacos better. We will be returning for a 7th visit. Jason M.

After Three days in Havana made our way to Varadero to relax. Coach journey was very good with lovely sightseeing and good tour guide. We were very welcomed by the always smiling Raul the Potter. Checking in was very relax with a glass of bubbly. This hotel has Butler's assigned to different section of the hotel. He took us to our room and explained various things and to make our stay at the hotel easy. Hotel has excellent facilities and it is All Inclusive and it means All Inclusive, food, drinks all sorts and various cocktails are available throughout the day and night. Food variety is good but would prefer more varieties in vegetarian dishes but otherwise superb. Service everywhere is excellent and cannot fault it, restaurants, bars beach side always happy to help. Entertainment in the evening is like visiting theatres, superb performances by all every night. Excellent beach with clear waters. Excursions are good to see the different part of the Island. Cuba is superb place to visit and is all possible with The Holiday Place who organised this trip without any problems. Definitely recommend to visit with The Holiday Place.

“Lovely holiday some improvements needed ”
Firstly if you are expecting a Sandals experience like other Sandals resorts you maybe disappointed. We had two lovely weeks here, there are a number of plus points, but certainly some areas for improvement, but on the whole we thought this was well worth the money and would recommend this hotel. The top ten plus points for us were; 1) The staff - without question the staff at this resort were better than any other resort or hotel we have stayed at. We simply cannot say how good, friendly and helpful the team are. 2) The pool area and reception lobby is stunning, with lots of waterways and a really relaxed atmosphere 3) The beach, clean, picturesque, white sands - so lovely to have a stroll at night or first thing 4) The caribe restaurant, lovely setting, fantastic food, and the only place to serve decent wine (see improvements) 5) The shows, lots of fun, some really talented people performing. The Michael Jackson show, which is mentioned a lot, was simply outstanding. 6) The beach hut & bar, a great place for breakfast and lunch and a fantastic view 7) your personal butlers - use these guys, I tipped both of them at the start and they couldnt do enough for us 8) A very good buffet restaurant - ok the variety from day-to-day wasnt the best, but the quality & service was first class, the fish counter & meat counter well worth visiting 9) Good choice of bars and restaurants with good opening hours so plenty of areas to relax - we really like the piano bar where a very talented piano player resided and the lobby bar 10) Good value trips (through our rep) we hired a classic car for a couple of hours, this is much better than a varadero tour, to be honest varadero is not great. Havana is a must, we did a one day trip, but wished we had stayed overnight. The hemmingway restaurant well worth a visit. We also did the 3 cities tour which included Santa Clara (where Che Guvera is burried) Trinidad which was lovely full of french & spanish classical buildings and centerfuegos (well something like that) again such a lovely town. The 3 cities tour was a long day, and should of done the overnight as we didnt get enough time in each place. And the top 10 improvements 1) The resort is tired and in need of some TLC, I am glad to say they are doing the place up, but they have a lot to do. 2) The smell - we saw this mentioned previously and it is true. Its not all the time, but by the Caribe restaurant and the beds by the bungalows at times during the day it smells. 3) The noise by the Caribe restaurant - make sure you are not in the rooms by here (fortunately we were not) but there is a noise which would annoy. 4) The wine - my god this was awful, we ended up buying wine as it was so bad 5) Toilet cleanliness - at times this was bad, I know its down to the guests, but there was no loo brush so guests couldnt clean up if they had an upset tum 6) The waterways, well some of them are not full which is a disappointment, the place would look so much better if they had water in. 7) the spa was a disappointment, we thought being ex-Sandals it would be better, so that was an anti-climax for us 8) Road noise - I know nothing can be done, but at times it was very noisy when we were sitting on our balcony. I know this wont bother everyone, but if it does, ask for apartments away from the road. 9) Wifi - not only did you have to buy 1 hour cards for about £3, it was only for the lobby bar - Wifi should be standard and free 10) The fish restaurant, the food was awesome, but the ambience wasnt great unlike the other restaurants - am being picky, but had to find a tenth improver. Overall fabulous holiday, great value for money and if I was going to Varadero again, I would choose here without question

    “UK Travellers READ THIS ”
I'll try to keep this concise and easy to read. We travelled on October 17th 2014 from Manchester and stayed for 2 weeks. The first thing to say is we have never known such friendly people from those we met on the streets during our trip to Havana to the cleaners to the managers of the resort. This was our first trip to Cuba and we both agreed we've never had such a friendly welcoming folk and good service wherever we've been in the world, amazing lovely people. The resort itself was nice and well kept and leads directly onto a beautiful beach with crystal clear waters. We did have an initial issue in that our room smelled a bit damp and got no sun at all. We aren't usually complainers but I mentioned it to out Thomas Cook rep Ana who was superb. By that afternoon we had a new room which was perfect. There is a beach bar there and waiters who will keep you topped up with a nice piña colada all day long. The main pool is good with a swim up bar where again you will find superb friendly staff who will keep your glass filled! There are a couple of jacuzzis and there is also a smaller quieter pool away from the activities if that's what you prefer. FOOD: for breakfasts and lunch there is the main buffet hall and the quality and selection is very good indeed. The waiter/waitress service is superb keeping you topped up with whatever you need and always with a smile. A special mention should go to Osnay, Andres and our favourite Gladys who always had a cheery smile and time for a chat. These people do not ask for or indeed expect a tip but my goodness they are worth one. There is also a choice of a la carte restaurants which need to be booked in advance. These are Italian, Seafood, Caribbean and Grill, all were good but the Grill was our favourite and you can book these as many times as you want. The excursions were all pretty similar to what we had done on previous holidays so the only thing we did was a trip to Havana. This was a 1 night trip including a visit to the Tropicana show but our rep Thomas Cook Ana (who was absolutely superb) managed to sort another hotel to spend an extra night in Havana as we really wanted to experience Havana. PLEASE NOTE: Give Havana a miss. Very poor place with next to nothing to do, this was quite a disappointment. If you need to go, do a one day tour as the Tropicana evening was 2 hours of repetitive rubbish (very similar to watching the camp entertainment on Saturday night tv shows in the 1980s). The evening entertainment wasn't from Londons west end but was certainly good fun but the Monday night Michael Jackson tribute was one not to miss (we made sure we had an early table at the buffet reastaurant outside so we could watch from the balcony). TIPPING: always a bit of a grey area. This was always appreciated but NEVER expected. From the pool bar staff to the restaurants the service was superb. We generally left a tip of 1-2 pesos at mealtimes and maybe 1 peso every 2-3 drinks and the level of service we received was outstanding whatever the tips. You don't have to do this but you WILL want to tip as the staff are brilliant. Even the room maids, once every couple of days we would leave a couple of pesos which would always result in a fancy towel display on the bed in the shape of an animal as well as a note of thanks. (1 peso = 65p ish) DONT MISS : the chaps who do the horticultural maintenance. Catch them by the Ping pong tables and they will get you a coconut from the trees and chop in open, splash a bit of rum in from the bar, wonderful. Again, tips appreciated. If you need some negatives here goes, some bits of the resort could do with a lick of paint. This caught our eye as soon as we arrived and we both had a grumble to each other but this soon disappeared when we realised what a beautiful friendly place it was. On our last night at the Grill we were approached by general manager Felix who was genuinely interested to hear how we had enjoyed our stay. If he had asked on the first day we would have had some trivial mutterings, after two weeks we were full of praise for the place and particularly the staff. If you're going to Varadero we could not put you off the Royal Hicacos, lovely place with even lovelier people.

“Beautiful resort, amazing staff, awesome experience ”
We stayed here for one week and what a fantastic week it was. From the moment we were dropped off at the resort until the moment we were picked up we were treated like VIPs, starting with Raul Javier at the front, that man is a genuine, passionate and truly loves what he does. A real pleasure to greet you. They certainly know how to take care of people at this resort. Do yourself a favour and book in concierge, you get things like first access to the a la carte, 5 hours of free WiFi (at least for the one week), and twice a day maid service. Their are actually more benefits, but let me just say it's worth it and Alex in concierge took care of us whenever we needed anything. The one thing people are always curious about is the food. I can honestly say the food was amazing at this resort. The buffet had theme nights, including Canadian (yes, poutine was their and was surprisingly really good) and Oriental. It was pretty cool, Raul at the buffet would always have a table made up for us, ready when we got there. We were a party of six and all the tables were for two or four. Raul was awesome though, as was another lady in the buffet, I think her name was Yunetzl, I hope I got that right because she was great too. The only downfall to the buffet was breakfast, I found myself skipping breakfast as the eggs were always cold and the bacon was weird, don't know how else to describe it. I found myself just getting breakfast at the bistro, which all the food at the bistro was really good. In regards to the a la carte restaurants, the ones we ate at were good, but the one that stands out above all others was El Caribe, that restaurant was amazing, especially the Cuban soup. Anyways enough about the food. Tours, so originally we booked our Havana trip through Sunwing, however, when we got there we were talking to people and heard it's not very good. We then encountered Maykel at the swim up bar and he recommended a private tour he could setup, and boy it did not disappoint. It was just our group, no large tour bus, and he took us anywhere we wanted to go, as well as places we should see. I highly recommend private tour for Havana. We also did the Catamaran, and it was awesome, it's a whole day, but was fantastic, just make sure if you are a party of two, one gets the chicken and the other gets the seafood so you can try both. Back at the resort the entertainment staff were fun, especially Veronica. Games, in and out of the water, dancing lessons, shows, there was always something to do somewhere. Now to my favorite people, the pool side staff. I can't speak highly enough about these three individuals. Angie and Yane, always made sure you got what you needed. Bonded with you on a personal level, just awesome people always having fun. Then there is Noslen, he is fantastic in every sense of the word. I could go on, but just know he is awesome. Always makes sure your glass is full. I hope Noslen is there when I come back, because I will come back because of him and staff like him. Yes, this resort is beautiful, yes the food is great, but it really is the staff that makes this resort a 5 star experience.

Set on one of the best areas of Varadero beach, in the Hicacos Peninsula. Sandals Hicacos Resort & Spa brings its Ultra All-Inclusive concept to Varadero. This resort is 30 minutes away from Varadero's International Airport, 2 hours away from Havana's International Airport and 10 minutes from downtown Varadero.
