  • Description Beaches: Pilar Beach, Ciego de Avila. Cuba

Bordered by large sand dunes and cliffs, this beach of incredibly fine white sand is kissed by the warm blue-green waters of the sea. Cayo Media Luna is located off the beach and is a magnificent option for diving and snorkeling.

Beach Pilar, It is said that in this beach the North American writer Ernest Hemingway came for Marlin fishing in his yacht El Pilar, from which the beach was named after. In its waters, Sword fish have been fished that exceed up to three times their normal weight, that is why during the fishing season, it is very common to see hundreds of fond people of this sport to furrow the sea in search of their prize as part of a competition that annually takes place in Cuba.

  • It covers an area of 6910 square km (2670 square miles) and has a population of only 500,000, accounting for the lowest population density in the country. Seventy-two percent of its soil is of top quality, and 82 percent of the territory consists of a gently rolling plain. The city's main artery is Independencia (Independence) Avenue, on which you will find the Principal Theater, the Raúl Martínez Art Gallery, the José Martí Park, San Eugenio de la Palma (the city's patron saint) Cathedral and a large number of shops, cafeterias and restaurants. The city's traditional arts and crafts fairs are very popular.,

The province has large reserves of underground water and many mirror-like lakes, among which the best known are the Laguna de la Leche and La Redonda lake. Its two most important cities are Ciego de Avila, the provincial capital, and Morón, where rural traditions are deeply rooted.,

The pineapple, the queen of fruits, is the symbol of this region.

    Pilar beach
Our third excursion was probably my favourite. We took a bus to Cayo Guillermo (approx. 45 mins) where Pilar Beach is. We then took a catamaran to an island and got our snorkelling gear. We snorkelled off the island and it was amazing! There were so many tropical fish all around us. We saw "Dory" fish (from Finding Nemo) and lots of other tropical fish that I had only ever seen before on TV. We then had lunch on the island (the chicken is delicious!) and went back to Playa Pilar (Pilar Beach). I had heard that Pilar Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and I have to agree with that. It's like something out of a movie or a magazine and you actually get to experience it for real! Words cannot describe what Pilar Beach is like. You have to experience it to truly understand the serenity and beauty of it. I recommend this to everyone. ---

    The best around
Ernest Hemingway's love of Cuba is well known, but not many realise the American novelist was one of the frequent tourists to Cayo Guillermo. Back in the 1930s, Hemingway spent a lot of time here sailing and fishing. To honour him, the most stunning beach on Cayo Guillermo, the Playa Pilar, was named after his beloved fishing boat, which was called 'Pilar'.

    Good, Good Beach
A lovely unspoiled and uncrowded beach. Wonderful talcum powder soft sand. Nice little cafe and beach chairs rented at a reasonable rate. I did a short hike around the point - nice birdwatching. Watch out for the coral rocks on the point - very sharp. I went back twice. $5 Bus ride from Cayo Coco

    Best beach Cayo Coco
Our first aim was to spot Flamingos, but while we were there, we decided to continue to Playa Pilar, as Lonely Planet describes it as (one of) the most spectacular beach(es) in the Caribbean. What a disappoint. This is no longer the quiet, far off beach. Beds are for rent and all were taken. The beach is pretty, that's for...

We've seen beautiful beaches in Cuba, especially Cayo Coco and Pilar Beach definately takes the cake.....so serene soooo beautiful.....an endless stretch of paradise!! The sand was white and sifted through your hands and feet like powder. The water was a beautiful turquoise all the way...as far as I can see....almost looked like you can walk across it!!

    Beach worth taking a look
This beach is closest to the hotel "Sol Cayo Guillermo" (where we stayed) but is accessible from all the hotels in Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco by a bus system that costs 5 pesos per person, per day, for unlimited use during that time. While there, it's worth exploring the rock face with some snorkeling gear. There are crab holes,...

    Stunning
This beach is stunning! Make sure you take you snorkel equipment with you as if you go out far enough you will find starfish. Take some money for the resturant their food and drink is very reasonably priced. It is definitely worth a visit especially when the bus only costs £3 (5pesos) return. Make sure you go :)

    Absolutely Stunning!
I went with my boyfriend and a group of friends. Before we left for vacation we did research and this was 1 of the top beachs in the world. Definitely a true statement. No rocks, no sea weed. Lots of sea shells for kids or whoever loves them. Water is crystal clear. Lots of beautiful fish (angel fish, star fish...

Beautiful beach. You can even go snorkelling there. But watch out for jelly-fish! Playa Pilar can be reached by taxi or bus from hotels in Cayo.

“not the best beach i've seen ”
We took the double Decker bus from the resort because I've read about it being a place to visit while in the area. The bus ride itself was like riding a catamaran it rocked and rolled. We sat on top to the beach and on the bottom on the way back. Obviously more rocky on top but still rocky on... More

What a gem-gorgeous beach that stretches for ever. This is a public beach that is reachable via public transportation at a cost of 5 convertible pesos per adult return. Loungers under shade are available for a nominal $2 per day. There is a restaurant/bar on site but quite a trek from the beach. My advice is to bring your own... More

Beautiful Beach. You will love it. Great Family attraction. Great by yourself. Great for any event. Lunch and drinks can be bought there. The guy is very quick to collect money for the chairs and he's a bit of a debbie downer about it, but aside from that, you'll LOVE the beach!
