Pilar Beach, Ciego de Avila. Cuba

  • Ciego de Avila Province
  • Daily
  • Destination: Ciego de Avila

Bordered by large sand dunes and cliffs, this beach of incredibly fine white sand is kissed by the warm blue-green waters of the sea. Cayo Media Luna is located off the beach and is a magnificent option for diving and snorkeling. Beach Pilar, It is said that in this beach the North American writer Ernest Hemingway came for Marlin fishing in his yacht El Pilar, from which the beach was named after. In its waters, Sword fish have been fished that exceed up to three times their normal weight, that is why during the fishing season, it is very common to see hundreds of fond people of this sport to furrow the sea in search of their prize as part of a competition that annually takes place in Cuba.

It covers an area of 6910 square km (2670 square miles) and has a population of only 500,000, accounting for the lowest population density in the country. The city's main artery is Independencia (Independence) Avenue, on which you will find the Principal Theater, the Raúl Martínez Art Gallery, the José Martí Park, San Eugenio de la Palma (the city's patron saint) Cathedral and a large number of shops, cafeterias and restaurants. The city's traditional arts and crafts fairs are very popular.,

The province has large reserves of underground water and many mirror-like lakes, among which the best known are the Laguna de la Leche and La Redonda lake. Its two most important cities are Ciego de Avila, the provincial capital, and Morón, where rural traditions are deeply rooted.,

The pineapple, the queen of fruits, is the symbol of this region.

Review about Beaches: Pilar Beach
Excellent Carlos

Pilar beach
Our third excursion was probably my favourite. We took a bus to Cayo Guillermo (approx. 45 mins) where Pilar Beach is. We then took a catamaran to an island and got our snorkelling gear. We snorkelled off the island and it was amazing! There were so many tropical fish all around us. We saw "Dory" fish (from Finding Nemo) and lots of other tropical fish that I had only ever seen before on TV. We then had lunch on the island (the chicken is delicious!) and went back to Playa Pilar (Pilar Beach). I had heard that Pilar Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and I have to agree with that. It's like something out of a movie or a magazine and you actually get to experience it for real! Words cannot describe what Pilar Beach is like. You have to experience it to truly understand the serenity and beauty of it. I recommend this to everyone. ---

The best around
Ernest Hemingway's love of Cuba is well known, but not many realise the American novelist was one of the frequent tourists to Cayo Guillermo. Back in the 1930s, Hemingway spent a lot of time here sailing and fishing. To honour him, the most stunning beach on Cayo Guillermo, the Playa Pilar, was named after his beloved fishing boat, which was called 'Pilar'.
