Port city that in the late 19th Century was the main access by sea to the eastern region of Cuba which explains the great colonial architectural wealth of the province. One of the places to visit is the Cuban Colonial Life Museum, placed in a great neoclassic house built in 1872. You may also make a stop at the Villa Blanca, at the Natural Sciences Museum, with an exhibition of one of the most complete collections of day time and twilight butterflies of the Antilles.

In over 25 miles (40 kilometers), the northern coastline of Holguín has 41 beaches. Guardalavaca and Esmeralda are the most popular beaches among foreign tourists. Pesquero Beach has scores of fascinating natural sites, both under and above water; Don Lino Beach combines open areas, architecture and the natural surroundings; and Blanca Beach is very close to Cayo Bariay, where Admiral Christopher Columbus first set foot on Cuban soil, during his first voyage to the New World. Cayo Saetía is northeast of Holguín. This natural spot has 12 virgin beaches.

Gibara
Gibara es una ciudad y a la vez un municipio de la provincia Holguín en la República de Cuba. La ciudad cabecera fue fundada el 16 de enero de 1817. También se le conoce como La Villa Blanca. La Ciudad de Gibara posee una rica historia y cultura propia acorde al linaje de su fundación y un hermoso y exuberante paisaje, bellos sitios arquitectónicos y un trazado perfecto de sus casas, calles y parques, pero la mayor riqueza según los visitantes es su gente, cooperativa, humana, cariñosa y un poco egolatra, orgullosa de su villa y de su historia.
La Villa Blanca aunque pequeña, posee un encanto peculiar, el contraste de un patrimonio arquitectónico atesorado por casi dos siglos, sus exuberantes paisajes, y el sentido de pertenencia y las raíces culturales de su gente, hace que todo aquel que la visita quede prendado de ella y se vea obligado a regresar una y otra vez a esta tierra, que al decir del almirante Cristobal Colon “ es la tierra mas hermosa que ojos humanos vieron”.
Actualmente existe una polemica acerca de si fue la Bahía de Gibara o la de Bariay la que dió abrigo a las naves del Almirante Cristóbal Colón en su Primer viaje a Cuba.
Es en esta ciudad costera declarada Monumento Nacional donde se viene celebrando desde el año 2002 el Festival Internacional de Cine Pobre donde se presentan filmes que concursan en diferentes categorías.
