Guardalavaca stretches over 3 km. of beach among steep cliffs, facing the Atlantic Ocean, 54 km. north-east of Holguín province. Its warm, quiet waters, turquoise blue in color, are protected by coral reefs, 300 m. into the sea, creating an ideal microclimate for sea life.

The water is very clear and the visibility good up to depths of 20 m. allowing for remarkable diving in places like “Boca de las Esponjas”, “El Salto” y “El cañón de los Aguajíes”. Gibara is home to a series of underwater caves unique in the island with great possibilities for cave diving.

The sea bottom is swarming with a variety of coral beds, crustaceans and fish such as barracuda, swordfish, peacock fish, spanish mackerel, etc.

Guardalavaca (meaning Hide the Cow) is called “Cuba’s Archeological Capital”. As legend has it, XVI and XVII century Spanish settlers used it as a hide out for their cattle, to avoid being ransacked by the corsairs and pirates frequently visiting the island in search of booty. It is also said that on the beaches of Guardalavaca settlers used to trade leather goods and salted meat in exchange for European goods smuggled by buccaneers.

Review about Beaches: Guardalavaca Beach
Excellent Carlos

The beach is fantastic
The beach is fantastic everyday but Sunday when the locals seem to spend a lot of time down in our area. The guys that work the beach shack, Carlos, Johnny and Jesus are fantastic and will go out of their way for you. Carlos and Jesus are both fishing nuts so some extra line and a few lures in you bag for them.

Excellent lopez

Guardalavaca Beach
Guardalavaca, a town to the north of Holguin region, is one of the best beach resorts in Cuba. Unlike the more popular Varadero resort, Guardalavaca is not very commercialised and still has its unspoiled natural white sandy beaches with clear turquoise water and tropical vegetation. This makes Guardalavaca the perfect destination for nature lovers. The water at the beaches around Guardalavaca is just the ideal temperature for swimming, snorkelling and other water based activities, which is big attraction for tourists to this region. There are many different beaches in the Guardalavaca area, and all these beaches are incredibly tourist friendly and immensely beautiful. It is also possible to find a completely secluded stretch of beach in Guardalavaca. The biggest beaches in the area include Guardalavaca beach, Pesquero Beach and Playa Dancing on the beachEsmarelda (a beach known for its clear water and white sandy coast). Pesquero beach is popular because of the stunning views it offers from the many mountains surrounding the beach. There are a number of coves in this area, and tourists looking to do a bit of exploring are sure to have a good time here. The easiest way to get to Guardalavaca is to drive into the town through Holguin or to take a bus into the area. It is also possible to fly into the Aeropuerto Internacional Frank País, which is the closest airport to Guardalavaca.

“Can you hear the clarinet Fernando? ”
Lovely warm and soft sand. No stony pebbles in this water. You walk in and bathe in the warmth of the sea. The life guards are friendly and professional. Yes there are people trying to sell you stuff. Remember this a poor country, so I for one can't hold it against them. As for the peanuts, give them a try... More

“Guardalavaca Beach ”
This beach is really great for us sun-dogs... the water is fantastic, the beach is cleaned daily and best of all there's a coral reef just a few hundred feet offshore. You can swim out at low tide but best to go out on a paddle boat or a sea kayak and that way have a place to hang onto... More

Part 1 was the Topes de Collantes, part of the same area, the higher part of it. Our group had an excellent guide, very knowledgeable and educated. The park is rich and colorful, quiet and relaxing. It is a lot of hiking involved but this is how you get to see things. If you are not familiar with walking and... More
